Banns were read in each parish so if anyone had any objections they could come forward.

How old was Martha Ashton? her parents may have objected if she were under age. Same goes for the groom.

The marriage you mention was by license (1826) so no banns were read on that occasion.
Since he was of Glossop Derbyshire and she was of Manchester Lancashire, they were able to obtain a license to marry.

I noticed he was a widower 1826, so when did his first wife die?

The British Newspaper Archive is one source.

FindMyPast says it has the same as the British Newspaper Archive, but I've not found it to be quite true.

Your local library might have a subscription for newspapers.

Is this your James Beale ?
17 November 1855 Windsor and Eton Express.
On the 9th instant James Beale employed as a feeder on a thrashing machine property of Philip Rose of Penn.
Basically it is an inquest into his death, at the end of the day he got his leg caught in the machine, and it took two hours to free him, he lived but 2 hours.  Before removal of the body some wretch robbed him of his watch and money.

1921 there is a Thomas Cross age 62 says born Levens Westmoreland, living Durham, with another wife Annie also 62 years old.

It's not exactly where he was born he was living there in 1901

The intake books for the orphanage do they still exist?
It might explain where Thomas Cross senior was, although it could be the usual - mother dead.

Lost shot, but there is a will of Joseph James dated June 1764 of Nottingham in the York Archives

I looked at all the baptisms not have the occupation of the father.

There is a burial 5 January 1764 Nottingham of a Marjorie James  ref: ancestry

The church is not specified on ancestry but the vicar Berdmore and if you google that he was the vicar of St Mary's.
