I found out he was married to Elizabeth Augusta Wollenschlager. His mother was Ada Emily Lilian Smith, his father William James Pay. Finding details about WJ Pay is difficult because there are quite a few...

The WO files of the Boer War are on line (and free) available via the National Archives.
The Boer War website can be used to find the right Pay and WO file.
Pay   E   5520      2nd Battalion Source: QSA medal roll in WO100/185   East Surrey Regiment
Pay   E E         1st Battalion Source: WO100/281   Grahamstown TG
I found handy info here on my adventurous gg father (William) Arthur Pay, who was a son of William James Pay from Deal, Kent.

William Arthur Pay Lived in SA from 1880-1998 and from 1901-1902. During this period he named himself Arthur William, William Arthur and simply Arthur.
other facts:
-fought in Boer War
-was married to Elizabeth Augusta untill she died in 1898
-was married to ?????? in 1901
-was a mining engineer
-lived in USA (1898-1901 and 1903-1910)  and in South America after 1910
I would be very grateful if you have any info on my gg-father :D
