Thank you, though sadly not an option for me at the moment - I don't have a FindMyPast subscription and with Level 3 lockdown no library access either.  Hoping someone may be able to do a lookup.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Brogden's Navvies - Magazine Article Help Please
« on: Saturday 30 October 21 23:19 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I’m looking for older copies of the New Zealand Genealogist and New Zealand Memories magazines, which unfortunately my local library does not keep.

I’m specially looking for two articles relating to the emigration of Brogden’s “navvies” to New Zealand in the early 1870s –

Getting to Gravesend 'Brogden's Navvies'
Beck, Martin, INNZNA
New Zealand Memories, Aug/Sep 2008; n.73:p.32-39

Cornish emigration to New Zealand
Viles, Dulcie, INNZNA
New Zealand Genealogist, Sep 1988; v.19 n.188:p.522-523

I’m hoping that someone has a copy and wouldn’t mind sharing the articles.

Many thanks
Catherine

Thank you William - these notices confirm the approximate birth year for both Ebenezer and Margaret, which will help us narrow down our search for baptism records.

Also - have found out a bit more about Presbyterian marriages at the time.

There were some Presbyterian churches in Northumberland where the minister went to Scotland with the couple and performed the marriage there and then recorded it in the church record of the parish church in England. Given that there would be no marriage register, it is likely that the only one available to record the marriage would be the baptism one, which would explain this one of ours.

Certainly learning a lot about marriage customs and practice with this search - and I appreciate all the help you've been giving.  Couldn't do it without you all  :)

Hi Christine

Thanks for the offer to look up the marriage in Norham. Not being able to look at physical records is the hardest part of searching from NZ, so all help is very much appreciated.

Your reply does makes more sense of the two marriages on the same day, though.  I wasn't aware that Presbyterian marriages were illegal at the time ... something else I've learned on this search!

Looks like we're back to trying to find a baptism for Ebenezer to see if a father's name is recorded.

Thanks again
Catherine

Thanks to all who have assisted me with this search, you've all given me leads and things to think about.

Thanks too, Terry for looking up the Coldstream marriage for me ... it certainly helps, and I've learned something new about 'irregular' marriages.  Fascinating!

Of course, it now makes me wonder if there was a 'church' marriage in Norham?  Is anyone able to check this for me please?

We also have Ebenezer's death in 1845, so this would fit with a birth around 1768-70.  We are still trying to locate a birth/baptism record - perhaps this will give his father's name?

The search goes on ...

Thanks Ambly

The two 'marriages' were confusing, but having Banns read in both places makes sense.

If anyone is able to confirm where the actual marriage took place, that would be quite helpful (and may give us a clue as to the fathers and their occupations).

Children of the marriage were:
Agnes - born 1794
George - born 1798 died 1801
John - born 1800
Mary - born 1803
George - born 1805
Robert - born 1807
Alexander - born 1808 died 1810
Alexander - born 1811

Thanks
Catherine

Can anyone assist with more information about my 4x great grandfather Ebenezer Davidson. I have hit a brick wall when trying to go back any further on this line, and would appreciate assistance in finding anything about his father/parents.

I thought a marriage record would help, and have found his marriage to Margaret Home (or Hume) in Jan 1794, but see that it has been recorded in both England (Norham, Northumberland) and Scotland (Coldstream, Berwick). I believe this is the same marriage, but wondered why it would be recorded in two different places/registers. Was this common?

Would the parish register(s) have any more detail - perhaps names of both fathers??

The family were in Norham after the marriage, and their children were born/baptised there.

Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Looking for descedents of Hugh Milligan
« on: Saturday 31 January 15 00:53 GMT (UK)  »
I've been researching some of Hugh Milligan's children in the hope that it might lead to something new to help solve this puzzle.

Hugh's daughter Elizabeth married William Groves in NZ in 1868. They had 2 children in NZ then migrated to Australia and settled in north Queensland and raised a family of 10 children.

Elizabeth died in 1929, and I've found this in the Queensland and Australian Death Records - Elizabeth Otway Groves died 26 July 1929, father Milligan and mother Elizabeth Otway

So wondering now if Elizabeth Otway was Hugh's first wife, or if this is a typo in the transcription (being Elizabeth's forenames)? Interestingly, several of Hugh's children seem to have 'family' names as second names - Thomas Batt Milligan, Isaac Henderson Milligan, Margaret Hood Clarke Milligan - so perhaps Otway is just another?

I haven't been able to find anything more about Elizabeth Otway, so hoping someone out there will be able to help shed some light :-)

Thanks Catherine
