It cost  70 pounds to attend 78 Lwr. Drumcondra Road to have your baby in 1948.

Very interesting information Annette for anyone researching private nursing homes. That was a lot of money in those days as the average industrial wage for males in 1948 was approx Ir£4.4s.0d according to the statistics and about half that for females - that £70 would have been about 15 or 16 weeks wages  :'(   :'(

Anybody know if there was a similar charge in the maternity hospitals? Maybe that's why a lot of babies were born at home in those days.

That £4.4shillings was probably for a 40 or 45 hour week - approx 6 or 7 Euro today.

It was very common for children in dublin to be known by their middle name in those days. I had an aunt named philomena teresa always known as tessie so is it possible that Jean might have been a middle name? FamilySearch lists a margaret boylan born dublin north + mother boylan in the jul-sep qtr 1928, vol2 p359 in GRO.

The child and family agency Tusla found details of falsified birth certs from 1946 to 1969 where the mothers name was changed or where the adopting couple were registered as the natural parents. The Irish Times reported on it as far back as 1996 and many more reports in 2018 and since the latest commission findings in 2021. News reports said Tusla would contact anyone who was affected. Some reports suggested there could be up to 20,000. These are some of the articles.

only maternity homes had to be registered starting from 1934. I read somewhere that records of children who were 'boarded out' were kept by the local health boards at the time as the family were paid for the child's keep. Do you have an address for Mrs malone? Tusla might have records.

Not in the Pro-Cathedral nor Halston Street archives.

I'll widen my search.

St Michans in church street is very near Blackhall place

RC Capuchins - St Mary of the Angels, also in church street.

Try Tusla for records of PACT & Bethany.

Mrs R (Redacted), address 107 Marlborough Rd.
This is in the list of Institutions, Agencies & Individuals compiled by adoption rights during the mother & baby homes investigation. So it may have been a private nursing /maternity home.

Wow. This is fascinating.
I too have a birth cert for someone who was adopted and the mother's residence was recorded as 33 Percy Place! There was me thinking it was her home address.
The baby however was born at Holles Street Hospital.
This was in 1939.
Kind regards,
Glen
Could they write to Holles street for copies of their paediatric medical records?

I have just seen this notice on the website of the Department of Children & Youth Affairs.

This is the link for the survey

https://dcya.fs.ie/

The survey is open for replies until Friday 7th June.

ireland has a closed adoption system and adoptees have no right to birth information. In many other jurisdictions adoptees have this right when they reach 18 years of age. It would be good if as many people as possible could complete the survey and send a message to the Irish government that this needs to change.
