Technical Help / Re: Legacy Help
« on: Wednesday 25 April 18 12:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi carol80,

Have you tried the following :-

Personally, I would make a copy of the last backup file in another location i.e your desktop, that you have from 7.5 ( hopefully this is from the last time you altered any info in 7.5 ) and then use that one when performing the restore.

Let us know how you get on and I can ask on their facebook group for extra help if you need it and I will pass the info back here  :)

Hi nestagj,

If using an iPad, how about using the Family Search free online tree ?

All you have to do is register an account and then you can add as many people as you want and there is quite a lot of information that is free, although some bits you have to pay to view images that are held by the big three.

There is also an app for android or ipad, that links to your account so you can use that sometimes instead of going onto the website.

Once a tree is created it can always be downloaded into Legacy Family Tree, Rootsmagic or other software to carry on from there if you don't wish to do it all online and have a PC :)

Technical Help / Re: Legacy 9 Program - Mapping Feature
« on: Monday 12 March 18 13:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Annette128,

I have Legacy Family Tree and experiencing the same problem.

After contacting support, and also finding postings on their Facebook page the program worked until Bing ( part of Microsoft ) changed the way that programs can communicate with their mapping service. This is the same as when FamilySearch sometimes change things and all the program writers have to re-write some of the program so that the search and sync options work again.

It is frustrating that it does not work and it has been said that they are working on getting it fixed. I am not a programmer so do not know how hard this is, but fingers crossed it won't be too long before an update is released  :)

Hi All,

Just found that there is a 10% discount for a Find My Past subscription on the uk bmd website

Finishes 21 Feb, so be quick  ;D For me it's the best discount seen for a while - there's been no 50% or similar for a long while, must be trying to recoup for the 1939 Register  :-X

Technical Help / Re: Windows 10 problems

Hi genjen,

Personally I would not use, or even pay for McAfee Protection when there is other software available for free and does just as well, if not better.

If you bank with Barclays and use their online banking, you can get Kaspersky Internet Security for 2 computers for free, just look for the link once you have logged in. The only thing is you just have to renew the license once a year.

An alternative is take a look on this web site it has the top ten free antivirus software listed and links to the downloads. My choice is Comodo, but is for the more technical, so good choices are :-
AVG ( this one seems to slow PC's down and has lots of advertising for upgrading to the paid version )

Just make sure you uninstall McAfee first, reboot the computer and then install the Anti-Virus software of your choice  :)

Family History Beginners Board / How much information about an ex spouse ?
« on: Tuesday 27 September 16 12:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi All  :)

Two fairly basic questions about things I've come across  ???

A direct line ancestor married a divorcee and then subsequently divorced !!

Firstly, they had no children ( that's the easy part  ;) ) but would you prove the previous marriage and birth of the other person, or would you just prove the marriage to the ancestor ?

Secondly, how easy to find the evidence and prove a Divorce so that it can be proved the next marriage was legal ?

Thanks in advance for any comments / opinions / suggestions  :)

Technical Help / Re: PAF files and gedcom
« on: Wednesday 27 July 16 14:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi Silvery,

The free version of Legacy Family Tree will open the PAF file / database directly I think the free version of Rootsmagic will aswell.

Sorry, but don't know how you would split the families once opened in the other programs as I have never done that  :(

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Birth Registration Index Volume and Page Numbers
« on: Monday 29 February 16 12:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All and thanks for your help so far.

This is a newbie question and hope some-one can help.

I have searched for the Births of three children, two where born before the marriage and have found the original BMD Index entries. I have then found their entries for just after the marriage - their names are the same on both entries including Surname. The second entries have the following :-

Volume: ****C and Page Number: C**A  ( numbers replaced with * )

I have found that the original Birth Certificates had to be changed after the marriage for Passport purposes.

I'm still not sure of the reasoning for the Third childs Volume and page numbers as it should be Volume 16 and not 5611B and then the page number does not add up  ??

The third child was born after the marriage, but the only BMD Index entry I can find gives the following :-

Volume: ****B and Page Number B**A ( numbers replaced with * )

What do these codes mean as they do not fit with any other BMD Index numbers for the area of registration  ???

The surname does not change, and it is not the mothers maiden name on either entry ??? :o but the Volume and Page numbers do  :-\

But of course why would the third child have such a different Volume and Page number compared to normal  ???
