Hello

I have checked and can't seem to find them , i can find some of them on the 1939 register living in caravans at Sandhall Farm.

I thought with the names perhaps they could be related some how to Mendoza and Ann Smith

Travelling People / JANE BOSWELL AND HER FAMILY NEWARK
« on: Monday 18 January 21 19:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I'm wondering if anyone please knows who the parents of Jane Boswell are. In the 1861 census, she is living in Newark, she is showing as being aged 36 and born in Sheffield. She has 4 sons

William born 1850 Horncastle and died 1872 Newark

Thomas born 1856 Newark, i think he married Adelina Smith daughter of William Boswell and Bethina Gray and then Matilda Charlotte daughter of Sistance Charlotte and Clementina Clayton.

John Boswell born 1858 Newark , i think he married Miriam Smith daughter of Moses and Eldri

Richard Boswell born 1860 Newark

In the 1871 census John and Richard are in the workhouse in Claypole. I found a newspaper report saying she had left one of them at the union and went to the Ridings of  West Yorkshire to live with a donkey dealer named Smith a police man apprehended her and she was sentenced to one month hard labour and told if she didn't take him on her release she would be sentenced to 3 more.

I could not find any more out about Richard after the 1871 census. I think the boy's father could be a William Johnson a lodger living with them in 1861 census. As i found a baptism for a William Johnson 1850 Horncastle, father William Johnson, mother Jane, abode Workhouse , Vagrants.

I'm also interested as Thomas born in 1856 is living with Thomas and Mary Ann Brown in the 1871 census Newark . Thomas Brown is a Chimney Sweep and just wondered if there could be a connection with the Brown gypsy family.

Any info would be a great help . Thank you

Could Mary Smith be Benjamin Stanley’s sister.

I just wonder if perhaps Mary Smith is grandmother rather than mother to Amelia looking at her age.

Is there a Burgess gypsy family , I don’t know

Does anyone please know anything about Mary Smith who was the mother of Ameila Stanley and her connections to the Stanley family.

when she died in America she was referred to as Aunt Mary Smith and Mrs Mary Stanley Smith in the papers , it said she was a gypsy aged 112 born England , mother of Amelia Jeffery,21 children , burried in Woodland cemetery.

In the 1870 Ohio census it shows her as Mary Smith, aged 89,born 1781 England, living with her daughter Amelia Jeffery aged 35, born 1835 England.

Is this Ameila's marriage

1855 Stoke Damerel Devon
Amelia Burgess , minor , father George Burgess a china man
Thomas Jeffery , full age, Tin man, father Matthew Jeffery a Tin man
witness Elizabeth Allen

found a baptism
Amelia Elizabeth Burgess and Marianna Burgess
parents Richard and Mary Burgess
15th Nov 1835
Swineshead Lincs.

any info would be a great help

I am going to look at Charlotte Smith who married William Smith he could be a son of Wisdom and Hannah.

mariage
William Smith to Charlotte Smith ,3rd August 1806 , Howell Lincs , gypsies

Some poeple have her down as Charlotte Allen , Charlotte Booth , Charlotte Boswell

William and Charlotte are suppose to be the parents of Alice and Charlotte Smith that had children to Lazurus Elijah Boswell

I am going to see if there could be some connection with her and  Joan Boswell
