Derbyshire / Slater Greengrocer van Staveley
« on: Thursday 02 August 18 10:17 BST (UK)  »
We are trying to find information on the Slater greengrocery van that was serving the area of Staveley in Derbyshire around 1960-70's.  My husband can remember a man passing him a box of veg and being told to take to his gran (she was a Slater prior to marriage).

Most family when asked can remember the van but not who owned it.  Does anyone have information on this van or even an old photo please.
Fingers crossed - Sue

Hi  The family are Steward/t's and that is what they started and ended back with,  The mystery for us is why Olman/Horseman.
Love Steward is last seen in Wilton Gaol in 1856 and after that I cannot find anything.  I am presuming she changed her name totally on release or has died.  Where would I find more information on her incarceration please

You do have the correct family and Henry and Ellen moved to Staveley in Derbyshire for the mines as they were opening and its the 1881 census that has them as Olman. 1891 & 1901 Horseman.  Our theory was dialect and if they had a thick accent then when asked for their jobs they could have been pony drivers in the mine and that was put down as a surname of Horseman. another thought was hiding from whatever Love Steward had done
Any thoughts on this are more than welcome.
Sue

Hi  No sorry, that family had origins in Scotland, my family are originally Canterbury, Dover and Ramsgate only.  This is very frustrating but I am glad of your help

Hi. Sister Emma married Nathaniel Goldsmith wonder if it was her.  Their mothers name was Emma and was still living during this time.  They were both single in 1911 and living at home Belle Vue Cottages Ramsgate.  Henry did not marry until 1929.
I really do appreciate all this help you both are giving me as it is so frustrating.  My mum is the sole survivor of Henry's children and it would be lovely to be able to tell her more.  Looks like we were very wrong about the man standing but can confirm that Henry (Harry) is the man sitting, my grandad.

Henry is definitely the man sitting down, but my mum and I have assumed that Frederick was the person standing.
I have found a Frederick George Young killed 30/3/1918 no G/21879 born Ramsgate and part of Royal Sussex Regiment.  Would this fit the information you have given. Also we don't have a Jane Reid in our family line.
I would love to find out more about Henry (also known as Harry),  which regiment etc.

Hi,  Henry Stephen Young (sitting) and Frederick George Young is the other, they were born in Ramsgate Kent.  Henry survives but Frederick doesn't.
My mum tells me that no-one even knew about Frederick as he was never mentioned when she was growing up, which is sad.

Derbyshire / Name changes??

Henry Steward born 1837 in Corton Denham, Somerset moved his family to Staveley in Derbyshire in 1874 to work at the new Speedwell mine.
When they appear on 1881 he is listed with the family name as Olman, in 1891 the name changes again to Horseman.  Henry dies in 1900 but the family still show on 1901 census as Horseman. they finally revert back to their true surname of Steward on 1911 census.
There is no-one left alive that can tell us why the name changes,  would anyone have any ideas please.  Our thoughts were dialects but not sure.
