I think you are right about the long s.  "Straw bonnt presser" does make sense.

Thank you!

Thank you, that is a possibility. “Straw bonnet presser” was an actual profession. I want to put an f into the middle of the third word, but can’t make it make sense that way

On the 1841 census? He later worked as a rent and debt collector, broker and auctioneer. Lots of scrapes with the law, so mostly up to no good, it seems.

In 1841 he is ~25 and I can't read his profession

Thank you all. I should have been more thorough.

It looks to be the second of the ones GordonFindlay identified. Father is identified as Alexander Riddock, Forester (deceased) and mother as Elspeth Riddock M.S. Grant (deceased).

The irony is that his father was in fact still alive and living in San Francisco. Died a few month later, mind you.

Thank you for your help.

Thank you so much! That is surely correct.

I new about Nethermills (or Nether Mills) because my ancestors grew up there, but I could not find anything that fit the other two.

Thanks for solving my mystery.

I can't decipher a couple of the placenames in the attached entry. The parish is Grange. The whole things seems to be:

October 9th 1755
James Huie in Nethermills had a Child by his Wife Isabel Simpson baptized & called George Witnesses Geo Ruddoch in ? Geo Longmoor in The Hillock Geo Craib in Cairnhill Margaret Ruddoch in ? [same as above] Jean Sime in ?

My 2nd great-grandfather had two illegitimate sons with two different mothers before heading to the U.S., marrying and raising a family of legitimate children. My great-grandfather was the second of the two, but I have had little success getting a trace of the first: James Riddoch. Here's his parish baptismal record

James Natural son of Alexander Riddoch Farmer's son Deuchries, and of Elspet Grant was baptized 7 Aug 1849. -- Witnesses George Simm and John Watson

He shows up with his mother in the 1851 census in the parish of Banff where his name is given as James Ruddoch. His mother's is given as Eliza Grant and she is a domestic servant to James Mitchell and his daughter Christian Kinnaird in Shirra Sheets (aka Sherriffseat or Sherriffsheets). After that, not a trace.

Anybody have any ideas?

He’s 9 in 1861 (implies 1852 given his birth month)

18 in 1871 (so 1853)

24 at his marriage in June 1875 (so 1851)

28 in 1881 (so 1853)

38 in 1891 (so 1853)

49 in 1901 (so 1852)

59 in 1911 Canadian census in June (so 1852)

Death certificate in July 1914 says 60 (so 1854)
