Australia / Re: Fairsky passenger lists late 1960's

Becw5 - Silly question probably, but do you know what state you were born in? (NSW, Qld etc)
That may help us to guide you to a link for extra info.

Why would you think that your birth month is incorrect? A child's birthdate wouldn't normally be changed prior to adoption (if you were adopted).

Where did you find that your mother's maiden name might be choppin or legon?

Please be aware that specific details re living persons are not to be used on this forum.

Gosh, what a wonderfully detailed explanation and set of instructions.

That will make life a whole lot easier when I have a chance to visit a FH centre

I'm sure anyone else reading this thread will also find these notes to be of invaluable assistance

Thank you very much Zacktyr

Just as an aside I have a John Wraith of Wootton in my family tree. He married the widow Mary Ford in 1582. Mary nee Woolke who married William Ford in 1566 Sellindge is my direct line

Sorry David, I don't know enough about Wraight family members to know if there was a connection with a John Wraith of Wootton.

Thanks Zacktyr for the info re FamilySearch.
I was hoping someone might have looked at the actual film and was able to verify if it contained original Wills or was simply an index.

Appreciate your help.

The Common Room / Found Illegitimate births including father's names - Lambeth
« on: Thursday 29 February 24 10:56 GMT (UK)  »
Found these births/baptism parish records for
Lambeth Lying in Hospital, [York Street] Surrey about 1840 - 1870

The 1853 partial page below show both parents names when child is illegitimate. Includes both occupations and their individual addresses.

Obviously some of these children were registered outside the Lambeth area - and some used Father's surname, others used Mum's name.

Imagine someone with a brick wall finding this info! It would be a wonderful find.

Hope it's useful for someone.

EDIT: These Baptisms are on Ancestry

Yes, you're right with the 1871 census for Thos & Eliz Smith + son Frederick (age 3)

Some of the Smith children were christened in Brighton as C of E & later ones Bp London at SOHO as Catholic.

Children were Alice 1866, Frederick W 1868, Emily M 1870 - all Brighton.
 - Seems Fredric was only one to survive past 12 months.
Next were David R 1873, Ada F 1882 both Bp Catholic at SOHO
Last child Florence B. born 05 Sep 1885, Bp 13 Oct 1885 St Marylebone, then Bp 05 Apr 1886 as Catholic

Don't know how many, or if any, survived as they don't seem to be on census post 1871.

Frustratingly, a real mixup of locations and churches

I've been looking for the Williams kids of David & Mary Ann of Brighton. All OK until Florence sent me in a spin so was hoping the Smith family connection would provide some guidance.

Thanks for your help. It's given me a few different avenues to investigate now.

I believe they are the same family even though one was RC and the other C of E.

For Florence Beatrice Helena SMITH Bp at SOHO has birth as 05 Sept 1885, Bp: 05 Aug 1886
Parents were Thomas & Elizabeth Smith. God Parents: Leopold & Florence Krautwig

The Private Baptism at St Marylebone for Florence Beatrice Smith was 13 Oct 1885 (not 1886).
Mother is Eliza Mary Smith (nee Williams), sister of Florence Krautwig (nee Williams)

Will admit to it all being rather odd.

Godmother (only) for David Richard Smith was Anna Bailey. Don't know who she is.
(Parents recorded as Thomas Joseph Smith & Eliza Mary nee Williams)

Haven't found him on census with parents either. I'm sure this family had an aversion to being recorded anywhere!!

Poor Law records - as transcribed on one site

Leopold Krautriger 47 yrs , Commission Agent, Roman Catholic
Admission 26th November 1897
Admission Place   Westminster
Poor Law Union St Marylebone

Wife - Florence Krau… 28, Gosfield Street

Discharge 23rd January 1898 - c/o wife
Leopold ‘Frankwig’  (reads Krautwig)

Gosh heywood you are impressive. Thank you so much for your help and expertise  :-*

That certainly appears to be our Leopold - so if he's still alive Jan 1898 and Florence says she's a widow 1901, his death should be in those 2-3 years.
 - Haven't found it as K..... Leopold but obviously need to check all surnames.

There is this person, transcribed as ‘Brantwey’ on one site but looks very favourable - ‘Krautwig’

1901 104 /31/9
28/29 Gosfield Street
Florence Brantwey 42   yrs widow Housekeeper Domestic b Brighton, Sussex
Florence -do- 15 yrs daughter Tailoress b Battersea S.W.

I wonder if this daughter is ‘Florence Beatrice Helen Smith’? Do you know what happened to the Smith girls?

That looks like a winner ..

Ahh "Brantwey"  Of course it is - I'd have guessed that one eventually  :D
Thanks ShaunJ for the snippet - does look like Krautwig doesn't it

Her age is close enough and Brighton birth also confirmed.
Very interested in "Widow" Status. Leaves a short time frame for Leopold's death - shall go and check the "Brantwey" surname for deaths!

I haven't found any further records for either Ada or Florence Smith.
They had a brother David Richard Smith Born: 27 Nov 1873, Bp: 23 Jan 1874 at SOHO Church. There isn't a birth registration in Dec Qtr 1873 for him either. Ada's birth reg seems missing as well which is rather strange.

re Florence Beatrice Helen Smith (Born 5 Sep 1885) registered Dec 1885 Marylebone - haven't found her with her parents on any census. It is a possibility that Florence Krautwig adopted her as she was her Godmother.

Looks like it's a breakthrough - thanks a lot
