Louth / Re: William Woods of Dundalk – mentioned in Tempest’s Annual
« on: Sunday 10 August 14 21:14 BST (UK)  »
The 50th Anniversary edition of Tempests Annual (1909) contained pictures and biographies of the great and the good of Dundalk . The Centenary Edition (1959) reprinted these and added more pictures, but no biographies to go with the new photographs. So there is a picture of a moustachioed William Woods among the new photographs, but no information about him. However, this is probably too late to be the William Woods you are looking for.  Brendan

This isn't much of a help to you. You probably need to see his obituary in one of the local Dundalk papers (The Dundalk Democrat or the Argus).
This is his death notice in the Irish Press, 12th November 1975:
"BRADLEY (Haggardstown, Dundalk) November 11, 1975, in St. Luke's Hospital, Dublin, Anthony Bradley, late Donegal; deeply regretted by his loving wife May, brothers, sisters, relatives and a large circle of friends. R.I.P. Remains will be removed to Ballypousta Church this (Wednesday) evening arriving at 7 o'clock. Funeral tomorrow (Thursday) after 11 O'clock mass to adjoining cemetery"

The inscription reads:
"R.A. (Bobby) Bole called home 8th March 1943 aged 14 years. His father Andrew Bole 8th Feb. 1946. His mother Maude Bole 5th June 1965. "He shall gather the lambs with his arm"'

Louth / Re: The Lowres family in Drogheda
« on: Monday 07 May 12 16:22 BST (UK)  »
Collon is not very far from Drogheda and there are a few interesting Lowres in the Church of Ireland Baptisms:

Richard (baptised 21/10/1805) , William (26/07/1807), Matthew (08/05/1809), Mary Anne (14/04/1811) the children of Thomas and Margaret Lowres, though the mother's name is not given for the first two, which was not unusual in the registers at that time. The father's occupation is described as "My Postillion", which I would interpret as a coach driver for the vicar, though that could be wrong.

There is also a gravestone inscription in Collon: "LOWRES - This Stone was erected by Margaret Lowres in memory of her husband Thomas Lowres who departed this life October the 8th 1814 aged 34 years. Also two of her infant children" This would seem to indicate that the mother was pregnant when the father died.

There are Lowres in the Church of Ireland registers in Drogheda (see http://creggan.armagh.anglican.org/droghedabaptisms.html) but I don't have access to them.

I just the above William might be of interest.

Brendan

From St. Peter's Parish Cemetery by James Garry:

"BUCKLEY - Christopher Buckley, Bolton Square, 21st January 1953. His son Ephraim, 24th November 1953. Mary Ann Buckley, wife of the above Christopher, 14th April 1978 aged 82 years. Their son, Christopher (Buckley), 25th January 1983 aged 62 years"

also

"BUCKLEY - Erected by Mary Ann Buckley, Bolton Square, in memory of her father John Ruddy, 15th May 1928. Her mother Rose, 26th May 1951. Her sister Margaret, 23rd November 1907. Her grandson Declan Grogan, born and died 16th December 1961. Also her daughter, Celine Grogan, (mother of the above Declan) 16th May 1983 aged 54"

That might help in deciding if the above Christopher is the "right" one.

Brendan

Sorry, I should add that the witnesses in Patrick Henry Gilmartin's Marriage were Robert Rowland & Richard Hobson and the witnesses in Henrietta Gilmartin's marriage were Joseph Parks & Janet Parks. As I say, there are no further comments.

In the baptism register of St. Nicholas Church of Ireland, Dundalk, there is a Thomas Gordon baptised 11/05/1873, Birth date 10/02/1873. Parents are Hugh and Maria Gordon. Father's Occupation is Iron-moulder. There are siblings William (BD 1855), Mary Anne (Birth date 1860), Margaret (1861), Elizabeth (1868), Samuel (1870), Margaret (1875).

I won't go into too much detail in case it is the wrong family, but it appears that Mary Ann married John McAlister, Clerk Great Northern Railway, on 11/06/1891; Elizabeth married Thomas Ramsey, Fitter, on 01/10/1891; Margaret married Robert Ramsey, Engineer, on 20/12/1900

Don't know if that helps.

Brendan
