The one you've found is not the correct type. Have a look at the link I gave in my Reply #3.

Thank you :) just bought it. Comes here at the weekend, hope it works!

Thank you for the advice everyone!
I found this puff thing, is it suitable? https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00017LSPI/ref=ox_sc_act_image_2?smid=A3KY5TH59FPY5P&psc=1
The reviews talk about it being used for cameras and electronics but I assume it can be used safely on photos and negatives.
I’ve also read rear cleaning the scanner glass with glasses cleaner is a good idea, has anyone had any trouble with that?

A question that maybe I should put in another thread but I was wondering, what resolution do you guys scan in? I’ve been doing 1000 but not sure if that’s right or not?

Hi all! I’m hoping some one might be able to give me advice.
My mum gave me a bunch of negatives that she had kept in a plastic bag (I know, I know). They were from the late 80s onwards and when I scanned them I noticed dust specks on the scanned images. I tried to clean the negatives with lots of things I read online which may help: rubbing alcohol, micro fibre cloths, water etc but they just seemed to rub the dust around, not remove it.
I thought when I go in to scan the family photo albums it will be better because they have been kept in an album behind plastic. I cleaned my scanner by dusting it and using a micro fibre cloth and started to scan. And I noticed the same thing still happens. It’s not marks on the image because when I re scan them after trying to clean the dust they particles have moved.
So I’m wondering if anyone has any idea how to clean dust from negatives, photographs and scanners?
Thank you :)

Hi everyone,
Looking through Somerset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1531-1812, I found an ancestor in 1730 but I can't work out these words next to his name? Can anyone help?

Thank you :)

Ah right I didn’t realise this. I’m very much a newbie when it comes to military research!

Forces War Records had some hits for ww2 servicemen but I have such trouble navigating that site. Maybe they didn’t have much information on them.

World War Two / My grandfather's war
« on: Friday 08 June 18 11:22 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I was wondering if you could help me. I am hoping to find what my grandfather did in WW2, what medals (if any) he received, what position he held and in what regiment.
My grandfather was Gordon Fred Ashford, born 28 Aug 1918 in Westbury-sub-Mendip, Somerset, England. Before he war he lived in Chew Park House/Farm in Chew Valley (before the lake was created). His father was Frederick Hubert Ashford (1888-1951) and his mother was Susan Ada Thyer (1886-1972).
My grandfather did an interview about his life for a book about the Chew Valley area. He said this part about his time in the services, I don't know if it's helpful at all. He's also not listed on the 1939 register but the rest of his family are.

Thank you for all your help :)

Hi everyone, thank you so much for your replies!

KGarrad - I totally forgot about the documents being destroyed. I'm hoping this isn't the case but it's something to bear in mind.

philipsearching - my dad's great grandfathers were: AG Harris, John Redman, James Ashford and Thomas Thyer.

MaxD - such great information! Are those dates accurate for the medal or just general?

I should have included a bit more background in my original post, my apologies.

My father is Robert Frederick Ashford and his mother was Joyce Lilian Redman. Her father was Frank Redman who was married to Lily May Harris. AG Harris was Lily May's father.

The 1911 census shows 'Lillie Harris' being 7 years old and her parents as George and Emily Harris, ages 31 and 30. I believe this census to be true as it places George's birthplace as Bishop Sutton which is where a lot of my father's family come from. The 1881 census lists an 'Alfred G Harris' as being 2 and born in Bishop Sutton with his parents being William and Mary.

If I were to guess, I would say AG Harris is both George Harris and Alfred G Harris. The only issue is the dates from the census are a bit out.

My goal is the find out what AG Harris did during the war, but if his record was destroyed then that seems unlikely. MaxD gave some great information, I was just wondering if it was exact, so AG Harris went overseas on 6 Jun 1915 and AG Harris was discharged normally on 30 Jan 1919.

Thank you for all the help everyone :)

Here is the front of the medal.

I’ve worked out what it means but I can’t link this AG Harris to my family tree. On ancestry none of the finds fit.

Was thinking 2219 could be his registration number?
