Hey snowolf,

My mom lives up in Shellbrook, and I can pop by the cemetery on my next time up (possibly next week)… it seems it hasn't been quite transcribed yet.

There are a bunch of Stene families up there, etc. so there may be some intermarriages etc. … If you can PM me a list of names to check in the cemetery I will see what I can do...Brightholme is approximately 30 minutes south of Shellbrook for point of reference..

I will try to get to library here in town to see if the Shellbrook history book lends some leads as well..

Found a John and Maria Mikruk in Manitoba in the 1916... They were born in Galacia (another word for Austria or something similar..She was born in 1893 (which is close) and the immigration date was 1899 ?? Do you know any children's names?

Hey Ibbotson,

Just so you know Wilkie is a small town of about 1301...I just so happen to have a Wilkie town history book on my bookshelf (my grandparent's lived there just for a few years).  It does mention a John and Annabelle McCorquodale he died in 1932, born March 22, 1859 from Guelph, ON.  He moved from Killaryney, MB to Coldspring district via North Battleford in 1906. She died in 1954 which matches the headstone Sandra found.

Hopefully this helps,

Jeff

Walter homesteaded in Saskatchewan, near Swift Current... If you go to familysearch.org and look under Saskatchewan Provincial Records 1879-1987 file #2399128, starting on page 301.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1971-41461-6951-69?cc=1916143&wc=9HT6-VZ3:1046439201

He apparently attempted to farm his land, but found the land very swampy and not good for cultivation.  Walter had his windows stolen, along with some wood.  To make matters worse, I believe his "shack" burned down as well.  He went back home to Manchester for awhile but couldn't afford to go back to Saskatchewan so his land was deemed to be abandoned and he had to withdraw his application around 1915.   So that example why he didn't return lol.

His brother William Henry died during the war, 1917...he was in the 5th battalion Saskatchewan... He died I believe on this battle:
