Thanks Max, I've just been reading that page. Interesting read.

Thanks Shaun. That's incredible to read. I need to get to Kew to read further.

The other thread about another soldier who died on the same day could be related. Thank you.

World War Two / RAMC questions
« on: Monday 02 August 21 18:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I have my grandad's service records, but I wondered if there was any way I could find out more about where he was wounded and what was happening in that area at the time? He was in the RAMC (22 Company 436207) and wounded in Northern France on 23 March 1945.

What does it mean on the army recordings under 'postings' when it's written X and a number afterwards. For example: X (ii) or X (iv)?

Are there any WW2 diaries for 22 Company (436207)?

Thank you.

Thanks for the replies.

Can you elaborate on 22 Company? Ie what cap badge was he?

WO 177/906 21 Field Dressing Station 1943 Jan- 1946 May

WO 177/766 176 Field Ambulance 1941 Jan.- 1943 Sept.
WO 177/767 176 Fd. Amb. 'A' Company 1942 Jan., Nov., Dec., 1943 May
WO 177/768 176 Fd. Amb. 'B' Company 1942 Sept., Oct., 1943 Feb.- Apr., July Sept., 1944 June, Aug., Dec., 1945 Jan.- May
WO 177/769 176 Field Ambulance 1944 Feb.- 1945 Oct.

We don't know his cap badge because, sadly, it was stolen by nursing staff along with the rest of his wartime and civilian possessions. I have his ww2 records though if it will be listed on that? He was a private.

What does the WO bit mean in your post?

What was your grand fathers date of birth?

Do you know what medals he was eligible to collect?

Try looking at the RAMC  web site.

His date of birth was 2 June 1923.

His war records list 'Awarded war medal 1939/45' and it also has '1939/45 Hly Stars'? I can't read the handwriting. It could be 'Fly Stars' or 'Hy Stars'. Anything like that ring a bell?

World War Two / Royal Army Medical Corps diary?

Hi

On my grandad's world war II records, it lists:

1942: 22 Coy
1943: 21 Field Dressing Station
1944: X (IV) List (hard to read but could be "List" or "Y hist")
1944: 176 Field Ambulance 29
1945: X (ii)
1945: 176 Field Ambulance (wounded by this time)

Does anyone have information on the war diaries for this field ambulance? And does anyone know what the X means in the 'postings' above?

Many thanks for your help.

World War Two / Re: Desert Rats in Cairo 1944?

Finally got around to re-upping the photos.

I haven't considered applying for his service records, mainly due to time/interest constraints. I might do in the future.

I know when my mum applied for my grandad's WW2 service record, one of the questions on the application form was something like, "are you the eldest descendant of said person?". In this particular case the answer would be no, so I'm not sure if that would effect the outcome of me receiving the records. I don't know.

Hi DMcSorley. The photos are from my Mannion side of the family not a McSorley. I can re-post them if you want to see them? I think it was just in a room with nothing else to see, no other people etc. Let me know and I'll dig out the photo. Cheers, all the best.
