Thanks Mary,
I realise that buying the certificate is the only really logical step. I realise that my mother doesn't want to admit that her father might have had an affair but these things happen.  I hope this conundrum will be solved soon
Many thanks for your imput.

Hi Mary,
the name Roman has been passed down within the family. Albert Cooper (my Grandfather) fathered a child to a woman from Liverpool beleived to be called Roman and the child was brought up by Albert's mother in Manchester after the mother brought him there as a toddler. Albert Cooper paid his mother for Albert junior's upkeep but he was never treated as a member of the family as such. My mother only found out about Albert junior's existence when she was an adult and then from a third party, neither of her parents ever told her of his existence.
The Albert Edward Cooper born in 1928 may not be the child but I have never been able to track down an Albert Roman in the birth registers. I do know there are several Roman's in the West Derby area, this of course be coincidental but I would like to think that there is a connection and I can maybe answer a few questions if I pursue this line.
I should say I have no idea where the name West comes from.
Thanks for answering, I sure hope that you can help.

Hi Sarah,
I am really trying to verify if this is indeed my mother's half brother. If so I then wish to find out more about his mother's side of the family. I guess the only way to learn more is to order the certificate and see who is named as the father.
Do you have any connection with this person Sarah?
Thanks for replying

This sounds like a great and worthwhile project. I no longer live in Manchester but have rellies there (and many in Southern) so I could make myself available at some point.
I have absolutely no experience in any aspect of this but would be willing to offer my services as a dog soldier, so to speak.
If there is a timetable for the work please let me know and I will see if I can manoeuvre (I wish I knew how to spell) some time off work.
Glad to help

Lancashire / Albert Cooper/Roman/West

Hi all,
I am still struggling with this person but I think I now have a lead.
There was an Albert Edward Cooper born Nov 1927 in Liverpool.
The maiden name of Albert Edward's mother was either Roman or West. Father was Albert E. Cooper also. Mother and father never married.
Anyone who can throw any light onto this person and the Roman/West side of things will be welcomed with very open arms.
Thank you
Wayne

What a really touching moment when Paxman discovered that poor people really did exist...humbling indeed.
It all seems so easy doesn't it. I hope when I travel around the country researching I get one of those empty first class carriages too.
Still all in all it was a good watch.

There are Glithero's in my family too.
A couple of brothers Samuel and George moved up to Manchester from the Northamptonshire area. Both at some time ran pubs in Manchester. Samuel later moved to Aberyswyth where sadly he committed suicide. George's oldest daughter Sarah married Henry Sharp and these are my Gt Grandparents.
I have recently been put in touch with a cousin in Stevenage who hails from Samuel's second marriage. Small world!

Lancashire / Roman (Liverpool/Manchester)

Some time between 1912 and 1920 (very approximate I know) my maternal grandfather Albert Cooper was a bad lad and fathered a child with a woman that was not his wife.
Some time later the child then a toddler was brought to Manchester to live with Albert Cooper's mother. The child was called Albert too and I beleive his mother was called Roman and hailed from Liverpool.
My mother Lilian Shepley formerly Cooper is the last of Albert's half brothers and sisters still alive. She didn't know the full story until she was much older and by then contact had been lost.
I am hoping to track down Albert if he is still with us or at least find out more about him and his family from Liverpool.
I have tried to track down a birth certificate without much success but I live in hope. There seem to be at least two branches of the Roman family hailing from the West Derby and Everton areas. Can anyone help me tracing this branch of my family?
