Glamorganshire / Gower and what it means(book)
« on: Sunday 18 June 23 14:31 BST (UK)  »
Just a shout-out for a book that I bought a year ago and have just have re-read.  It doesn't contain any specific genealogical info but it's a well-researched book by the rev, Philip Stephens.

Nowadays, 'the Gower' almost always refers to the Gower penisula. In his book, Philip Stephens describes the history of the 'Cantref Gower', bounded east-west by the the rivers Lougher and Tawe and to the North by the rivers Aman and Twrch. So it inclcudes towns/villages such as Ammanford, Brynamman, Gwaun-cae-Gurwen, etc. that I'd never considered being part of 'Gower' as a child

His book charts the history of the 'Gower Cartef' from it's earliest inhabitation to the 20th century. It includes political, economic, social and religious developments over the centuries.  What I really liked about Srephens's book is that its not just a 'bland history'.Throughout his book, Stephens goes into detail about the history of individual villages, hamlets and towns. Another thing I liked is that he explains the meaning (in terms of Welsh, Old English or Scandinavian) of Gower place names.  These were place names that I'd grown up with and just accepted. Stephen's book helped me realise that there was often a deeper history to these place names.

Anyone intersested in buying the book van do this via an e-mai to gowerplacenames@outlook.com

Disclaimer: I have no commercial interest whatsoever in any sales of this book. After my first read of this book, I contacted Rev. Stephens and offered to promote his book in any way way I could. Just because I thinks it's a good book that perhaps deserves more attention.

FWIW, I suspect that many of the developments in the history of the Gower also apply - to a greater or lesser extent - to other areas of Wales.

Technical Help / Re: FTM and Ancestry

Hmm.

MacKiev would know much more about this than me. I just note that FTM and Ancestry communicate with each other via a so-called "application programming interface" (API). A kind of 'handshake' whereby FTM (and Rootschat) agree to communicate with with Ancestry and exchange 'data' such as login details, synch info and finally exchange data.  Sounds simple but the 'handshake' eventually translates into the details of an exchange of 'bits and bytes'.

API's are updated from time to time. For example to update the security (or efficiency) of data transmission. The updates may be either on the Ancestry side or (less likely) the FTM side or (ideally) both. If Ancestry have updated their API, it probably won't affect 'supported versions' of applications (like FTM and Rootschat) running on 'supported' operating systems. But it's possible (just pure speculation on my part) that older IMacs running on older versions of Mac OS might not be able to translate any updated 'API' into the stream of 'bits and bytes' that Ancestry currently expects.

One way of testing this theory would be to install a 'trial version'' of FTM on a different computer/IMac. Unfortunately, MacKiev doesn't generally provide 'trial versions'. You might - via MacKiev support - be able to install a temporary (trial) version on a different PC/IMac. You might even be able to persuade an IMac shop assistant to let you (temporarily) install FTM as a 'test' as to whether you might buy a new IMac.

If you can easily acces Ancestry via FTM on a different PC/IMac, then the changes are that your older IMac/ Mac OS are a major factor in making a connection. If not, then the jury's still out.

Technical Help / Re: Help with error message - Adobe Photoshop Elements 14

My apologies Carol! I missed (or inadvertently skipped over) your 'new software ordered' reply  >:(. Forgive me, I'm an impulsive, opinionated and long-winded 'replier' at the best of times and I was too focused on Gadget's links and on my own 'Google'' results. I think this is generally called 'tunnel vision' ;).

I'm sure that your updated version of PSE will work just fine! From what I've seen at Adobe, the more recent versions of PSE are a bit more 'glitzy' that for example PSE 14: more (for Rootschat fairly useless) options under 'Quick Edits' and 'Guided Edits' and all sorts of 'Quick fixes' and 'Effects'. But all the tried and trusted PSE functions are still available in the 'Expert mode'.

As far as I can see, PSE 14 dates from 2015. About the same time Windows 10 was first released. Since then, there have been 7 newer versions of PSE.

I'm not a 'techie' by any means but I have read that Windows 11 works ('under the hood') differently to Windows 10 in some respects. Notably things like memory management, etc.

As Gadget's links show there are various 'tweaks' that people have made in attempts to get older versions of PSE to run under W11. Some successful, others less so.

Personally, I would advise upgrading PSE to the current version (2023). I'm not a big fan of manually editing the Windows registry or (temporarily) disabling Windows security options to 'sneak in' a version that isn't really compatible with W11. Yes, you may be able to get PSE 14 to 'work'. But at the possible risk to 'Windows 11 stability'.

As far as I know, the upgrade price is about $80 (£67).

FWIW, I run FTM 2019 on windows 11 without any problems.

Technical Help / Re: FTM and Ancestry

Good to hear that it's a 'known problem' and that MacKiev are keeping you in the loop.

If I right click on the Ancestry icon, one of the menu choices is 'synch options'. I have 'manually' selected. With an internet connection, I'm logged in to Ancestry (with my username and password) automatically.

- If I 'hover' with my cursor over the Ancestry icon, I get some info about whether I need to synch

- By 'right clicking' on the icon, I see a menu of options:
   > view my 'linked tree' (in a browser) from FTM
    >'synch';  I first see a message 'connecting to server' and then a 'weather report' for synching: green is fine, orange is doubtful, red is probably will fail.

Just out of curiosity, at what point are you unable to synch?  Do you have no connection with Ancestry at all (logging in, on hover over icon), no connection with the 'server' when trying to synch? Or does the synch start but fail?

It's strange that the synch. problem only occurred last month.

I'm running FTM 2019 under Windows 11 and don't have a problem synching with Ancestry.

Here a few resources that may help:

My try - maybe a bit sharper.

I'm not at all happy with this 'attempt' but it's at least (IHMO) better than the original.
