I'm inclined to say that Eliza's maiden name is KERWIN, assuming the first letter can be taken as a K?
Other interpretations would be appreciated since her surname has attracted numerous alternatives in various record transcriptions.

I have purchased the birth certificate for the girl (no first name recorded) of  8 June 1862 in the superintendant registrars district of Farnham in the counties of Surrey and Southampton which shows parents are Charles (Corporal 76th Foot) and Eliza NASH (nee Kierwin or similar) of Sabastapol Road, Aldershot. Assume address was their army married quarters.

Am I permitted to post the certificate here as I would appreciate your view on the mother's maiden name?

Is is common for there to be no first name recorded as in perhaps the parents had not yet chosen one at the time of the birth?

I nevertheless propose to take this record as the birth certificate for my Sarah Ann NASH.

Thank you all for your continued research - I was not expecting it.

There is much for me to consider.

From recollection, there was an unrelated GORDON family in the Pocklington area. That family may also account for some of the 1939 Register sightings.

keyboard 86 - Thank you for spending so much time on researching my GORDON family.

Charles (born 1831) had an older brother Thomas (born 1828) and younger brother Edward (born 1834) according to my uncle who carried out the initial research into the family in 1992. Sadly my deceased uncle's records are not available to me.

The Driffield Times reported on Sat 24 Aug 1889 that Thomas GORDON age 61 committed suicide  in Pocklington by hanging. The dates seem correct that this is my Thomas. Is it acceptable to post the newspaper article on the other noticeboard for information only?

My great grandfather John GORDON (born Molescroft in 1865) ended up in Camberwell, London come the 1939 Register. I have 2 female cousins descended from John who have always been known to me.

There is an Agnes (born 1871) and 8 others (born 1900s) in Pocklington according to the 1939 Register but have no idea whether we are related.

I was successful in getting an article printed in the Pocklington Post a year or so ago but did not get any reply. Suspect my only other option to find living relatives is to send polite open letters to anyone living in the Pocklington area.

It would be wrong of me to expect you or others to devote any more time to my enquiry. I now have many more lines of research to follow up.

Thank you all once again for your help.

Thank you to keyboard86 for the 1861 Census info and to Rosie for her additional guidance.

Ideally I would like to know where this photo was taken. It's possible it was taken on the land of gentry.

I confirm the link is to my GORDON family of Market Weighton and Pocklington.

Rosie,

I have posted a photograph which includes my William GORDON (1831-1898) on the Resources & Offers board.

The 1841 Census (HO107; Piece: 1220; Book: 9; Page:10) for South Gate, Market Weighton includes:

William GORDON, age 40, born 1801
Ann [nee HALL], age 30, born 1811, Yorkshire
Thomas, age 13, born 1818, Yorkshire
William, age 10, born 1831, Yorkshire
Edward, age 7, born 1834, Yorkshire
Mary, age 0, born 1841, Yorkshire

The 1871 Census (RG10; Piece: 4759; Folio: 8; Page:9) for Union Street, Pocklington includes:

William GORDON, age 40, shepherd, born Market Weighton
Mary GORDON [nee DUNN], age 33, born Hambro', Yorks
William GORDON, age 7, scholar, born Molescroft, Yorks
John GORDON, age 6, born Molescroft
Tom GORDON, age 2, born Pocklington
Edward GORDON, age 3 months, born Pocklington

On 18 November 1898, my William GORDON age 68 committed suicide in Pocklington which appeared in the Hull Daily Mail on 22 November. Apparently the press also mentioned that his brother hung himself 14 years earlier but I cannot find any such ancestor.

Associated surnames include ATKINSON/FRYAR/REVELL/SCRUTTON and possibly STEEl.

It is thought that my GORDON ancestors originated in Fife, Scotland and came to the East Riding (via Northumberland) around 1840. First sighting is in the 1841 Census for William GORDON (b abt 1800 in Northumberland) and family. No sighting for 1861 but appeared in Pocklington for census of 1871, 1881 and 1891. The family appear to have also dispearsed to Langtoft, Bridlington and York. By 1900 my direct known family were in County Durham where my grandmother was born in 1900.

My William and descendants were shepherds. How do I attach a photo?

I wonder whether any of my GORDON family still live in the East Riding?
