Have you tried to find them on the valuation rolls? You can search valuation rolls on Scotland's People. Another useful source for in between census years are  electoral rolls- those for Glasgow have been digitised and are on Ancestry.

William

Thanks for the reminder.  I did try the valuation rolls but couldn't find anything definitely however I just checked the electoral rolls on Ancestry and they were helpful - found one ancestor 4 times, at two addresses previously unknown.

Ah, well that makes sense then.  Definitely not upper class as far as I know.

Too bad though.  I was amazed at the info I found on my family in the Vancouver directories - occupations and addresses for every year from 1870's - 1950.

Remember that these directories were put together manually - so the data could be a year or two out of date by the time it is published?

Yes I totally agree.  However I've been looking at the years 2 years before and after the census as well.  I will keep plugging away I guess.

Lanarkshire / Glasgow City Directory info not matching Census

Hi all,

I recently found most (all?) of the old Glasgow city post-office directories online at archive.org but I'm struggling to find any of my ancestors in the books despite having street addresses from the censuses in 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901.  I have checked years on both sides of the census years, and have searched by name AND my street name to no avail. In many cases, I find the correct street and address but a different name is living there.

Does anyone have experience in using the city directories?  I'm wondering if only the name of the OWNER of the home is listed, and not the tenants?

I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks!
Barb

Early 1860's or possibly very late 1850's.
A young married couple & may be a wedding photo.
You can see attention is drawn to her wedding ring which was a common practice by photographers.
I would suggest early 20's.
So a couple born around 1840 +/- 5.

Darn I was hoping it was a little later, in the late 1860's.  If it's the couple I was thinking of, they weren't married until 1871.

I hadn't noticed the emphasis on the wedding ring.  Thanks for that tidbit!

I am trying to ascertain who the people are in this photo and I'm wondering if anyone can help me narrow down the year, or decade?  I believe they are my GGGrandparents but it would depend on the date, and the estimated age of the man and woman.  Are they a couple?  A mother and son? Siblings? or ?  Most likely, taken in Victoria, BC.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks everyone for your help!

I do like that side-by-side map - very cool.  I have bookmarked that site to use again the future.

I'm looking forward to driving through the area on Thursday!

Here's a screenshot if that helps.

Shropshire / 1841 census location - Higher (&?) College, Darliston, Prees

Hello all,

I'm trying to get a better idea of the location of the residence of my GGG Grandfather, John Shingler (20), who was listed in the 1841 census with his mother, Elizabeth (65) in Darliston, Prees, Shropshire.  The residence says Higher (&?) College.   I think there is an "&" between the two words but I'm not sure.  I can find Higher Heath on a map so wonder if that's it? No sign of the word "College".

He was baptized at St Chad, in Prees so I'm guessing it's close by.

I will be visiting the area on Thursday (Sep 14) on my way to Liverpool.

Thanks for any help you might be able to give me.

~Barbara
