South Africa / Finding birth records
« on: Sunday 12 November 17 13:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I know that my Great Grandmother was born in about 1860 at Fort Beaufort, Cape of Good Hope. Her name was Isabella McGill and her father, Michael McGill, was serving there in the British Army as a private in the 59th Regiment of Foot.I have been trying to trace birth records for Isabella but to date have failed. I think her father was Roman Catholic but I havent found any of those records in S. Africa. It may be that births of foreign nationals werent recorded. if anyone can point me in a direction to search I would be very grateful.

Thankyou. Yes I have her father’s military records. That is the same Michael McGill. There was a sister Rose Anne and I’m looking at her records.

Thankyou Pauline. I posted today as I had just heard from GRO that they could not find an overseas record. I have looked on FindMyPast  they have a record of her marriage in India but not her birth. I would like to know who her mother was but I guess even if Incould find a birth record her mother won’t be on it !!

i am trying to trace birth records of Isabella McGill who, according to UK  censuses in 1881 and 1891 was born about 1859 in Fort Beaufort, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Her father, Michael McGill was serving as a private in the 59th Regiment of Foot.I have been through the usual paid fro websites to no avail. I have looked at S. African Genealogical Records and searched through parish records but can't find her.Any ideas?
Thankyou

Hi Garen, I agree its not that Charles Horton, His son Charles Herbert Edward Horton, born 1888, served with the Royal Field Artillery (regimental no. 813) in 1911 until 1914(?). I suspect he was too young for that photo if , as you say, it was in the mid 1890's.
I'm attaching a photo of the Charles Horton who fought in the Afghan War which I have just been sent.
Once again thanks for your interest.
Ann
