The Common Room / Re: Can't find in 1861 census Davis, Chadlington Oxfordshire
« on: Friday 09 February 18 23:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Chris,

Just read your post. I am a direct descendant of John Davis and Hannah Townsend. I have undertaken quite a bit of research on the Davis family.

John Davis, Hannah and William (who was my 2x Great Grandfather) were living in Stonesfield at the time of the 1861 Census. Though the census returns from that year are missing, they do show up in a directory of 1862/3 as running a bakery and butcher's. John was a master baker by profession and William was a butcher.

John died in 1866 and is buried in Stonesfield grave yard. His headstone is very well preserved and all the wording is still readable. He unfortunately died of consumption.

Sarah is the only enigma, though I did find her as a witness to one of her siblings weddings in Stonesfield. But after that the story goes cold. Though there a couple of weddings in the Woodstock district that require further research.

If you want to find out more please let me know

Best regards

Mervyn

Canada / Eric H Churchman and Ona D Churchman (nee Hall)

Dear All,

Can anyone help me with the following:

I am looking to see where in Canada Eric H Churchman and Ona D Churchman lived or if they have any family members in Canada still living? I am a distant cousin of Eric's and I have been looking at our shared family history for the Howard/Fitt/Churchman family and it would be great to share what I have found out.

I know that Eric and Ona were married in 1946 in Scunthorpe, England.
They emigrated to Canada on the 4 July 1956 on the RMS Saxonia. This departed Liverpool and arrived in Montreal.

I am of the understanding they resided in Ontario but this is where the trail ends.

If anyone is able to help it would be greatly appreciated

Best wishes

Hello,

Hopefully someone can help with the following:

I am looking for the passenger list for particular voyage between Calcutta and London (via Cape Town) on the Duke of Northumberland.

I know this ship left Calcutta on the 28 February 1837, arrived at Cape Town 24 April 1837, left 4 May 1837 (Source The Asiatic Journal 1837) and arrived at Gravesend on 27 June 1837 (Source Lloyds List 30 June 1837).

In the Government Gazette for the Cape of Good Hope 1837 it lists the following:

Duke of Northumberland, ship, R, McCarthy, from Calcutta Feb, 28 for this Port and London. Cargo, sundries - Passengers for the Cape. Major, Mrs and Miss Debahaw, and Capt. and Mrs Hughes; for Englan, Meads, Chester and Knyvett, Major Bell, Capts. Brown and Chester, Messrs Fraser, Campbell, Iselin, McClure, Roussac and Son, Falconer, 5 children and 6 servants; 42 discharged soldiers, 1 woman, and 4 children

Barradalles, Thompson & Pillans, Agents.

I Believe that my 4 x Great Grandfather John Hurrell (may be recorded as Harrold) and Susannah Hurrell (may be recorded as Harrold) are on this ship.

John was a discharged soldier and Susannah would have been one of the 4 children.

It would be great if these records survive that this can be proved.

If anyone has any information that may assist it would be very much appreciated.

Best regards

Hi ShaunJ,

Thank you for your reply, this has really helped.

There is another baptism record that I have found on the back of your reply.

http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=bl%2fbind%2f005136996%2f00175&parentid=bl%2fbind%2fb%2f95927&highlights=%22%22

It is from 1830 in Meerut.

Susanna Arnold daughter of John Arnold, Private 16th Lancers (Illegitimate) Born Feb 10th 1830, Baptised Sept 29th 1830. Looking at the original document it looks like this was transcribed from the original baptism records. Given how uppercase H can look like A depending on writing styles, this could account for the difference in the surnames.

This records does coincides with Susannah Hurrell's birth in Meerut, her fathers name and regiment at time of birth. Given that Susannah's children had olive skin complexions, there is a possibility that Susannah's mother could be of Indian origin.

Was (Illegitimate) sometimes use in the records when Soldiers fathered a child with an Indian lady?

Armed Forces / John Hurrell 1790 - 1867 - 16th Lancers

Hello,

Hopefully someone can assist with the following:

John Hurrell is my 4 x Great Grandfather.

In the 1851 Census (Cawston, Norfolk) he was recorded as an Out Pensioner Chelsea Hospital, Private 16th Lancers.

His daughter Susannah Hurrell was born in Meerut, India in 1830. This ties up with the regimental history as his unit was based their from 1826 to 1831.

Though I have not been able to find a record other than the 1851 Census showing that he was in this regiment. Find my past does not bring him up in their Military records. Can anyone help with sourcing the relevant muster rolls or Chelsea Hospital / Army pension records?

Does anybody have access to the parish records for Meerut, India to see if a marriage was recorded for John Hurrell or the baptism record for Susannah Hurrell?

Your help will be very much appreciated
