Thank you very much la grande-méthe. I hadn't seen the parents names on the marriage that I found unless I was looking at the long record. That helps a lot!

Details from 1851 which are not same family as those in Queen Street in 1841.  :-\

22 King Street
Mary   Payn   Widow    73   Jeweller   bn France
Alphonse   Payn   Son   19
Mary   Payn   Daughter   16
Armand   Payn   Son   15
Alfred   Payn   Son   15
Angeline   Payn   Daughter   9
Children all born St Helier

Image does give Mary's age as 73 which if she is the mother of those children cannot be right.

I did think the age was off a bit. Do you know where burial records might be? Are any of them online? Thanks for the 1841 Census.

Hi,

The birth certificates of the children say the following:

Catherine Stewart - Parents married Apr 1856, Berwick
Alexander Stewart - Parents married July 1855, Berwick on Tweed
Ellen Falconer Stewart - Parents married April 1855 Berwick
William Stewart - Parents married June 10, 1855, Berwick on Tweed.

Does not say England or Scotland. All different. I have tried looking both places.

I wasn't sure if you would have this or not but there is another child: Mary Ann Barbara Stewart b. 18 March 1867 Perth. On that birth is says 10 June 1855 Berwick Upon Tweed.

Perhaps they didn't get married or it was an irregular marriage? Try getting in touch with the Berwick-Upon-Tweed record office.

Hello!

I am hoping someone with more expertise that me might be able to help. I am helping a friend with their family history and discovered that they are from Jersey. This is what I have found so far:

Marie married Jean Payne in St. Hellier on 9 April 1831 in St. Hellier. She was from Granville (I think) in France and he was form Nantes.

Fast forward on to a directory in 1839 where I find Mary Payne at 24 Queen Street owning a Fancy Repository. No sign of Jean Payne but he must be somewhere as they have children later on.

Fast forward again to 1851 where I find Mary Payn, a Jeweller, living with her children: Alphonse, Mary, Armand, Alfred, and Angeline.

So my questions are:

(1) Where would I find a death record?
(2) Is there an 1841 Census for Jersey?
(3) Can I find out anything more about her business?

Thanks,
Hannah

Hello @janeli_1,

I had found her death record and seen the gravestone. I did check Northumberland records (I live on the other side of the Border in Scotland). I wasn't able to find anything. I'll have to go back to it.

Thanks

John Harbottle's parents are Robert Harbottle and Barbara Rochester.  Let me know what it is you are looking for.

I am a Harbottle and have been looking for information on Barbara Rochester for 10+ years. If anyone has any clues it would be greatly appreciated. I live in Scotland and after checking ScotlandsPeople repeatedly with name variations have never been able to find records of Rochester in Inverness or anywhere else.

Thanks,
Hannah

I don't know whether or not you have seen this site but it looked quite interesting:
https://encyclopedia.1914-1918-online.net/article/prisoners_of_war_and_internees_great_britain

This is one of our sources of information. We are working with Dr. Panikos Panayi on this project.

Thanks for confirming that KGarrad.

Hello Sand,

There were around 452 internment camps in Britain so it may be a bit tricky to find out exactly where he was sent. That being said there were very few internment camps for families. As far as I am aware Isle of Man was only for civilian males. It may be worth checking the local papers in Leeds first as they tended to round up 'Aliens' in groups especially if they were transferred.

There is the Internment Research Centre in Hawick [I am the archivist there] but it is still a work in progress and the archive is still being built. It was only launched in November of last year. There is a map with the camps on the website which is still being added to if that helps stobscamp.org/irc.

Sorry to not be of more help at the moment.

Best of luck in your search,
Hannah

WW1 In Memoriam / Stobs Military Camp
« on: Friday 29 June 18 20:04 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

We intend to create a research center based in Hawick, Scotland, in the coming year. We will be making as much material available online as possible particularly relating to Stobs Military Camp. As part of this we will be identifying as many soldiers and prisoners from the camp as possible. If you had a relative that was at Stobs I would love to hear from you! I really want this to be an amazing resource for anyone researching their family history and a commemoration of the events that took place at the camp.

Please email me through rootschat and I can supply you with my home email. The beginning of the website is www.stobscamp.org.

Thank you all in advance,
Hannah
