Armed Forces / Re: Merchant Navy records?
« on: Friday 01 September 17 17:08 BST (UK)  »
Thanks so much for that Seaweed. Some of that information I already have. I'm particularly intrigued by the fact that some reports have my ancestor as being a casualty of the torpedoed Diplomat, while I know for a fact that he survived this as I had a great aunt who recalled 'he was never the same after he was torpedoed', having suffered injuries, but survived. It seems he never got over the loss of his men. I would be interested to see the incident report....

How did you know which page to look for?

Armed Forces / Merchant Navy records?
« on: Friday 01 September 17 16:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have an ancestor who was a captain in the merchant navy during both world wars. He captained a ship called the Diplomat which was torpedoed and sunk.

Does anyone know how I would access any records regarding the merchant navy? I would love to find more details about his service.

Many thanks.

Monaghan / Meginns of Castleblayney, Co.Monaghan
« on: Friday 01 September 17 16:10 BST (UK)  »
Looking for Meginn family of Castleblayney in 18th century. I know my ancestor was born in Castleblayney 1797 and was a painter, moved to Liverpool before 1820, where he died 1862. Wondering if I can find out when he moved or trace further back. Not sure where to start - first of my ancestors to be born in Ireland! Thanks.

Hi, would have lived around Merseyside/Liverpool. I'm thinking it might be the son of the ancestor I thought it was, due to the discrepancy in dates now....

That's great, thanks so much! Looks like I need to check my dates though? This uniform definitely post 1870?

Armed Forces / Anyone help identify this uniform?

Hi,

I have a photo of one of my ancestors and I'd love to know what kind of uniform he is wearing, his rank or anything else that can be gleaned. Any ideas and information gratefully received. His dates are 1812-1870 and he looks to be an older man by the time of the photo. His occupation was a chainmaker, but clearly he served in some capacity.

Many thanks for any help!
