Family History Beginners Board / Can I find an ancestor by occupation
« on: Monday 01 April 19 02:45 BST (UK)  »
I've been researching a family line and I've run into a wall because this particular many greats-grandmother had all her children years after her husband died.  She never remarried, but she used her married name for all her children as well as their fathers on their birth records.  So I have a (hopefully) correct first name, and occupation, and area, but no last name.  Is there a way to search for Bricklayers in Marylebone, Middlesex, England in 1860?

While I have the attention of you naval experts, can I ask another question?  I have another ancestor, (this sailor's brother, in fact) who was in the navy in the U.S. as he immigrated in 1905ish.  But this ancestor completely changed his name and parents' names and birthplace.  Do you know if only natural born citizens were allowed into the navy circa 1906-1917? I tried looking it up but I can only find current rules for enlisting.

Thanks David!  He was born in Marylebone, more specifically Willesden in 1893.  I will start hunting for him i the Royal Navy.

Hello,
I have a photo of an Ancestor from England, born about 1893 who is in a sailor uniform. I'm not sure if he was the British Royal Navy or Merchant Marines or something else.  Can anyone help me? I appreciate any help you can give!

So what do the two long service stripes mean? Did they get a stripe for every year served? And how common were the marksman badges?

Can you tell me where you found the marriage record for Harriet Shave and Michael Donoghue? My initial search on ancestry doesn't find it.
