World War One / Re: Lancelot Brown 12481 kings own

Hi Moiramount,

The same article appears in the "Derbyshire Advertiser & Journal" of 31st July 1915 & the "Ashbourne Telegraph" of 30th July 1915.

As far as service numbers go, he appears to have had just the one, this being 12461. I have found no record or evidence suggesting a second number at all, at this time.

The two brothers by the way were:

Clifford, who was in the RFA (Royal Field Artillery).
Private B C Brown (shown as Bertram, earlier in the article), 1661, Royal Scots 15th Divisional Cycle Company

Both Lancelot & Bertram had sent letters home from the front to their parents Mr & Mrs M Brown.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

Hi Moiramount,

The article in the "Derbyshire Advertiser & Journal" of 30th July 1915 as posted by cath151 above states:

"No 12461, Pte Lancelot Brown" who was one of three brothers serving in WW1. Lancelot is at this time in the 16th Battalion, King's Liverpool Regiment.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

Hi Moiramount,

From the war diary of the 11th (Service) Battalion, King's (Liverpool) Regiment (Pioneers):

"9th June 1917

All companies worked on new CT from ALBATROSS forward. WANCOURT area. No casualties. No 12390 Sgt F ANDERSON, 12872 Sgt F L NEWALL, 12876 T NUTTALL, 12461 Pte L BROWN, 21241 Pte T BANCROFT awarded Military Medal. 6 OR's reinforcements."

Haven't found the second London Gazette entry as yet.

Hope this helps though.

Kind regards

David

Hi Moiramount,

Have found the first, MM in the London Gazette. In the Supplement to the London Gazette dated 18th July 1917, page 7276. He is at the top of the right hand column as:

12461 Pte L Brown, L'Pool R.

It is just a list of names of those awarded the Military Medal unfortunately rather than a citation.

I shall continue to look for the second entry.

Kind regards

David

Hi Moiramount,

Many thanks for clarifying that, to start with there are in fact two medal cards for him

The first one shows that he was awarded the 1915 Star, The British War Medal & Victory Medal. He served in France from May 1915, possibly the 10th & was demobbed at the end of the war.

The second one for him shows that he was awarded the Military Medal & Bar, He was gazetted (in the London Gazette) for the Military Medal on 18th July 1917, when a private in the 11th Battalion of the Kings Own Liverpool Regiment.

At the time that he was awarded the Bar he was an acting Corporal, He was gazetted for this but the date is unclear, it shows L G 62, the L G is London Gazette, the 62 might mean 6th Feb? No year shown, but perhaps 1918?

Going to see if I can see a service record for him & also see if I can find out more regarding his Military Medals.

Hope this helps so far.

Kind regards

David

Hi Moiramount,

Having had a look, I cannot see a Lancelot Brown with service number 12481.

I can however find a Lancelot Brown of the Kings Own Liverpool Regiment with the service number 12461.

Could you clarify his service number please, is it 12481 or 12461.

Thanks

David

The Common Room / Re: A 1939 Register Question?

Hi Debra,

Very many thanks indeed for your reply, much appreciated.

Brilliant! Many thanks for finding that on Ancestry, much appreciated.

Unfortunately I don't have access to Ancestry at the moment! However, using the info that you have provided in your post, I have managed to locate her at last on FindMyPast! She is under Gertrude K BOWEN born 1887, an inmate, Dispenser. Image clearly shows Gertrude V Bower as you found.

My grateful thanks again, not being able to locate her in 1939 had been bugging me for some considerable time!

Kind regards

David

Hi all,

A short update to the story of my gt gt aunt Emmeline Gertrude Victoria Bauer/Bower.

With the recent release of the 1921 Census, I was eventually able to locate her, under just her initials E G V B and she was in the Hanwell Mental Hospital, Southall, which became St Bernard's Hospital in 1937. So its now known that she was in the hospital for at least 23 years until her death there in 1944.

The 1921 census also showed her to be an inmate and occupation (probably former) as that of dispenser, both a match for the details upon her death certificate.

This suggests almost certainly that she should therefore be showing at the hospital in 1939. I shall have to comb through the 1939 register again, once more using the TNA references kindly posted by dawnsh to see if I can find her!

This new information also helps to give a time frame for her going into the hospital, namely sometime between 1911 & 1921.

As ever with family history, more questions than answers!  ;D

Kind regards

David

Australia / Re: Frank Burgess BAUER - Emigration & WW2 Military Record Assistance.
« on: Thursday 05 January 23 17:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Ten years on (can you believe that!) I finally have an update to Margaret Burgess (later Bauer) story!

With the release of the 1921 census I was at long last able to find out where she was born!  Would you believe it! She was born in St Helen's, Lancashire. Therefore Debra's find of that Burgess family is almost certainly correct!

Armed with the new info re place of birth, I started looking into her father's life. I discovered that her father Joseph Burgess was in fact married twice!

He was first married to an Ann Leather on 6th July 1885  at St Mary the Virgin church in Prescot, Lancs. Both were aged 22 years and Joseph a Pattern Maker by trade. Ann Burgess Nee' Leather sadly died in Oct 1888 aged 25 years, with burial taking place at St Thomas church, Eccleston, Lancs on 31st Oct 1888.

Using the GRO Birth Index with mother's maiden surname showing, I found the following birth record:

Burgess, Margaret; Sept Qtr 1887; MMS Leather: Prescot registration district; Volume 8b Page 738. Therefore Joseph Burgess and Ann Leather were Margaret Burgess's parents.

Joseph remarried to Maria Mullen in the June Qtr of 1892 within the Prescot registration district area.

Ii have also now researched the family a few generations back.

My thanks again for all help and assistance with this thread, all very much appreciated.

Kind regards

David
