US Lookup Requests / Re: Angus family in New York
« on: Friday 29 March 13 08:33 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone do a look up in United States federal census for a Scottish family who I believe emigrated to New York  around 1923?  Sarah Ballantine Angus (m.s.Smith) and David Angus. They were both born in 1897 in Scotland  and married in 1922 in Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire, Scotland. I have a vital record for a son born to them in Tillicoultry in 1923, Scotland. After this no BMD in Scotland or UK. For any of them. 1925 1930 and 1940, US Federal census show a match for their criteria in Bronx New York and latterly Queens, New York, unfortunately I only have basic viewing subscription and am not sure if they are family in question?  Sarah B Angus, and David Angus and David Angus jnr also appear on passenger lists for New York but cannot view them either. Wonder if anyone can help me pin point them please? Or can tell me the ship they may have sailed in and any relevant information on their lives once they arrived there. David Angus was a bricklayer to trade. Thanks C

This will is held at the Jersey Archive, your relative should be able to get a copy from them.

Testament of Nina Mary Picot née Wimble, Les Tours Farm, St Clement, widow. Dated 26 March 1925. Codicil added 8 July 1930 (D/Y/A/98/49)
    1935-12-16 - 1935-12-16
    2 papers
    file

Make sure she knows that the Archive is only open Tues, Wed and Thurs and that she will need some form of photographic ID if she wants to look at original documents. It usually takes a week for them to process a copy so it may be easier (and cheaper) for her to order a copy on-line to be collected when she is there.

In fact I suggest you check out the Archive website www..jerseyheritage.org/ as there are several entries relating to your family. Use the advanced search option and enter surname first, comma, space, christian name. Clicking the binoculars beside the name will bring up a list.

PS What have you done with the weather over here? We flew across the world to get away from the rain.

Marion is going to be there a week at this stage, we tried to 'pre-order' documents but just end up going around and around in circles trying to get them to give us direct answers our question.  Last count we have 10 emails - so a little bit frustrated.  Not sure if it is language barrier or us not explaining our needs the right way.

We appreciate all the help offered and suggestions provided - will follow all of them.  Will Marion need proof of her relationship to the family - her birth certificate showing mum's maiden name ?

Hi Suz,

This has me confused as the 1891 census has her age as 38, that gives her birth about 1854 - but this probate is stating she died in 1835 - before she is supposed to have been born.  :-\

Georges probate date 1922 does state it goes to Nina Mary Picot widow - so now totally confused

There are 12 parishes in Jersey, each has it's own graveyard but you would need to contact each parish individually re their records. In St Helier, the capital, burials where originally in the Town Church yard and Green Street cemetery, when they were full new cemeteries were opened - Almorah and Mont a l'Abbe. St Helier church and Green Street records are sketchy but both Almorah and Mont a l'Abbe have been indexed (indexes at the Archive). The burial records for St Clement's parish church are on-line.

In addition to those mentioned there are various other smaller cemeteries dotted around the island. A good source for burials are the funeral directors records many of which have been deposited at the Archive and are gradually being indexed.

Bear in mind that Picot is a very common name and that our ancestors had no imagination when it came to Christian names hence lots of Johns, Williams, Georges, Elizabeths and Janes.

I am away from the island at the moment but may be able to do a bit of digging on your behalf when I return in April.

Thank you - a family member (Marion) is traveling over there from Aust in May/June (don't have exact dates yet and this will be of an enormous help to her.

Trying to find the burial locations for the above family members.
Confirmation on birth, death and marriage details.

Migrations of William Arthur to Australia - believed to be to a Port in South Australia, where is rumoured he jumped ship there and initially made a life for himself before heading to Victoria.

We have found census entries for some family but unconfirmed.

A descendant family member is making the trip from Aust to Jersey mid year and staying a week to locate any potential family links, so getting as much background work before hand is vital.

We have contact the local church's and archive office but seem to be going around in circles getting straight answers.

Need to know where the cemeteries are, if none then where they would be buried eg: on church ground, on private land or in another Provence/township.

Any help and suggestions appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

Anna
