Berkshire Lookup Requests / Re: Abingdon Gravestone Inscriptions for PRINCE

Thanks for that - I'll have a look. Then I would just need to find somewhere to read it! I assume some of the local libraries nearby must have readers. Thanks again. Ali :)

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Abingdon Gravestone Inscriptions for PRINCE
« on: Monday 08 May 06 18:28 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I was wondering if anyone here has transcriptions of the gravestone/monument inscriptions for Abingdon St Nicholas and St Helens?

If so I would be very grateful if you would consider providing me with any information relating to the surname PRINCE. If there are a lot, it is mainly the name JOHN PRINCE I am interested in and especially one that was buried in St Nicholas on 19 Jan 1774.

Many thanks in advance for anyone who can help.

Best wishes

Ali :)

Hi Colin

Thank you for the information. I had seen both of those baptisms and the Thomas and Sarah couple are my current best hope (I didn't know he was a carpenter). I believe that John and Mary are part of the Prince family of Hyde Farm in Marcham. I spoke to the current occupants of Hyde Farm who have researched the family and they could not see a link with my John. My major concern with the Thomas and Sarah family is that none of the names seem to carry down - but I know this isn't necessarily anything to worry about.

In the Will written in 1773 and proved in 1777 that could be my John listed his occupation as a 'Sackcloth Maker' and he seems to have owned a few properties, part of a strawhouse and a garden in Abingdon. He mentions his wife Elizabeth and a son Thomas (who I can't see a baptism for....) but nothing else - at least on the abbreviated transcript I was given.

Again, thanks for your help. It's reassuring to have another perspective! I suspect Thomas and Sarah are my strongest option for now. There was an Elizabeth HOLT baptised in 1719 in Thatcham - do you think that is too far away? The older baptism in Abingdon could explain why only a few children. Although 12 years is a big age gap....  Anyway!

Thanks

Ali

Berkshire / Stuck with Abingdon Ancestor John Prince. Advice Required!
« on: Monday 01 May 06 18:39 BST (UK)  »
I am new to this message board so hello first of all!

I am looking for advice and assistance with the following. I have traced my PRINCE family back to a John PRINCE who married an Elizabeth HOLT in 1741/2 in Abingdon St Nicholas (children Susannah, John and Charles). The difficulty I am now having is identifying his parents. I have no references that can really help me and the sheer number of John PRINCEs in Berkshire is leaving me baffled. The fact that they had so few children also leads me to wonder if he was older when he married... I have made a list of 'contenders' with the help of the IGI and what limited parish record entries I have been sent by a researcher and am still no closer to finding the answer. They span such a large time frame too. I wonder if anyone has any suggestions of a way forward here. I have a will that may be his proved in 1777 but have no proof that this is the case.

So basically, any help will be greatly appreciated as it a frustrating problem that has been stumping me for a very long time now!

Best wishes

Ali :)
