Essex Lookup Requests / Edward Elsom Family
« on: Friday 01 June 12 19:40 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information on the Edward Elsom family of Leyton.  The following children were born to Edward and Mary Elsom there:
Mary Ann, 1785
Benny Dixon 1791
Sarah (mine) 1794
Ann Charity 1797
Henry 1798

I am looking for Mary's family name, their marriage information, any other children, and birth and parent information for both Edward and Mary.

Thanks, CLLM

« on: Thursday 05 April 12 17:40 BST (UK)  »
On Free BMD there is a death registered for Charles Pennell in September 1841 in N. Aylesford, Kent.  I am missing my Charles Pennell but there was Pennell family was around the area of Northfleet and Aylesford in early census.  Could someone check to see if there is more information about this Charles Pennell?

Thank you.

London and Middlesex / marriages in 1814
« on: Sunday 01 January 12 22:18 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking at a marriage record for my ancestor in 1814.  There is no parental consent given.  So, my question is this:  How old did she need to be to be married without parental consent in 1814.  I have found 2 potential families for her name and can eliminate one if there is an age requirement, as one would have been only 14 at the time.

Thanks for any help.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: George Pinnell/Pennell

I am looking for my Pennell family that was in Westminster.  Thomas Pinnell was born to Charles and Mary Pinnell in 1804 in Westminster.  I am looking for any information about Charles and Mary.  I'm hoping that maybe they are related to your family there and someone has information about them.  I estimate from Thomas' birth that they would have been born about 1770-1784, married about 1795-1803.  Have you come across a Charles Pinnell/Pennell in that area?  I'm looking for marriage, birth and family information.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Re: Sarah Elsom marriage look-ups
« on: Wednesday 20 April 11 15:58 BST (UK)  »
I have been looking around and found a Sarah Elsom born 1794 in Leyton, Essex.  That would be the right time period for the first marriage in 1814.  Parents are listed as Edward and Mary.  The proximity of Leyton to the area of London that Sarah married in (all 3 times) makes me think that this is my Sarah's family.  The fact that Edward and Mary also have a daughter recorded named Mary Ann (1785) is another clue.  Sarah named her daughter, my ancestor, Mary Ann.

I have done a little search and not found a marriage for an Edward Elsom to a Mary in that area.  I also looked for a birth for Edward there or close and found nothing.  Would someone be willing to check for the marriage of Edward Elsom to Mary in Leyton or close by and find the date and place of the marriage, and her family name?  Also, would you look for a birth for Edward Elsom in that area probably in the 1750's to 1765?

This forum is a great help for those of us who live "across the pond."

Thanks,  Claire

My ancestor Sarah Elsom was married 3 times.  I have the information about the grooms and the dates and places.  I would like it if someone could look up these marriages in the original records and perhaps find information about her parents.  If I could even get the witnesses names it may give me a clue as to who her parents were.

1.  Sarah Elsom married John Levens 17 Dec 1814 at St Luke Old Street,
     Finsbury, London

2.  Sarah Levens married David James 22 Aug 1821 at St Leonards Shoreditch
     London

3.  Sarah James married John Everitt 11 April 1827 at At Giles, Cripplegate,
     London

I am sure this is my ancestor because her daughter's baptim record has her parents as John and Sarah Everitt and her name as Mary Ann Elsom Everitt.

The Common Room / Re: "spinster" age

This marriage took place in Finsbury, London.  I guessed at her family/parents and birth date based on the fact that there was only one Elsom family with children christened about that time in the area where her second marriage took place--St Leonard's Shoreditch.  So no actual facts about her age or family.  Just a guess.

The article about the marriage law was interesting.  It looks like in 1814 the law was 21 for both parties or permission--unless they eloped and no one knew them.

I may never figure out who Sarah's family was or her birth information.  There are so many variations on the spelling, but it is spelled ELSOM on her daughter's marriage and death records.

I appreciate all the help.

The record says married by banns, so I assume banns were read.   The witnesses I have seen on most other marriage records had at least one of the family names.  This one didn't, so maybe married away from people who knew her.  Our ancestors can be such a mystery!  This Sarah has been a real hard one.
