Buckinghamshire / 1851 Buckingham enumeration districts help
« on: Saturday 04 May 19 19:02 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace details of Gawcott Road, Buckingham, residents in the 1851 census. I have drawn a blank trying to find the road by going page by page through the online images for the town's enumeration districts. Can anyone point me in the right direction - I'm not familiar with the town, so have no local knowledge to draw on. Thanks in anticipation...

Kent Lookup Requests / Ann WICKEN - Sundridge/Westerham
« on: Sunday 15 March 15 10:53 GMT (UK)  »
I'm having another crack at an old brick wall - trying to find the parents of Ann WICKEN, born c1788 in Sundridge according to census returns, married 1816 to Josiah ROBERTS in Brasted and died 1867 in the workhouse in Sundridge.
Given her age at marriage, she may have been a widow. She may possibly be the sister or close relative of John Wicken, born around 1800 and buried in Sundridge in 1875.
As the marriage record is the only rendering of her maiden name that I've found, she could possibly have been a Wickenden (a more common name in the area) or a Wicking/Wickens etc. Her birthplace could equally have been a neighbouring parish - Westerham - Chevening etc.
I know all about her family coming down the line from her marriage to Josiah, it's going back up that's proved impossible so far.
Thanks for any help offered!

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Re: Local press and courts for Fleet area
« on: Sunday 07 July 13 12:30 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for the tip Jebber, I will follow that up.

Tom - the parties involved were Alfred George McCarthy, of Sevenoaks, and Elizabeth Garrett, daughter of William Garrett of Crookham, Hampshire. Their marriage was due to take place on 15 September 1928 at Christ Church, Crookham. Many thanks for any further news.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Local press and courts for Fleet area
« on: Saturday 06 July 13 09:09 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me which local newspaper would have carried the most comprehensive overage for the Fleet area - village of Crookham in particular - in the late 1920s?

I am hoping to find coverage of a court case for breach of promise - apparently my grandfather was sued after jilting his fiancee within days of their marriage. A bad move in that her father was a Crookham policeman...

I also need to find out which kind of court would have heard that kind of case.

Thanks for any tips given.

London and Middlesex / Re: Frimley Street, Mile end - which ward?

Thank you to everyone who kindly responded, problem solved, using several tips you've provided. The original Frimley Street was "blitzed" and Frimley Way is a modern development in the same area, I believe.

Sadly not I think, as I don't have a specific name to search for, so would have to browse in a similar fashion to find it. I am interested in a particular property in that street, rather than a person.

London and Middlesex / Frimley Street, Mile end - which ward?
« on: Wednesday 19 September 12 09:00 BST (UK)  »
I want to browse the online electorcal records covering Frimley Street in Mile End, immediately post-WW1. Knowing which voting ward the street was in would make the search much simpler. Does anyone have the answer at their fingertips?
Many thanks for any help given,

Kent / Walter Corke and Lilly Wilson 1896 marriage
« on: Sunday 08 April 12 09:05 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help with any information about Lilly Wilson (possibly Lily or Lilian etc), who married Walter Corke in December quarter 1896 in the Tunbridge registration area.

I can find no trace of the woman, but Walter (b1871 Rotherfield) is listed on his own in the 1901 census in Tunbridge Wells as a boarder. He subsequently died in the December quarter of 1908.

Thanks for any help offered,

Waterhouse

Sussex / Re: TRESS - ADES - BARRY family links
« on: Monday 19 March 12 08:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Judy, thanks for your contribution. If you refer to the earlier reply in this thread from Roger, I think it has the details you need. He also helped me determine that there is no blood link between that part of the Barry family and my Tress ancestors. Thanks for your contribution and good luck with your searching.
