Buteshire / Re: Kilmory - Is "Crawford" the same as "McGraffan"
« on: Friday 03 February 23 01:00 GMT (UK)  »
Yes I know her birth parish and no there's nothing in the Kirk Sessions nor was she baptised under Scott, Barron or Bisset (her mother's maiden name). Also no record of her or her mother being married at any time to a Scott.
Oh, just realised I had forgotten to mention that my gggrandmother's first name was Isabella though I'm sure you have all worked that out!
Just putting it out there that the OP's Isabel Crawford or McGraffan may also be due to a similar circumstance.

My gggrandmother was variously referred to in the OPRs and civil registration documents as "Barron", "Scott" and also as "Barron or Scott". On her death cert her father is listed as David Barron who was indeed the husband of Isabella's mother however he died in 1818 and she was b. 1828. I can't find a baptism for her but have concluded that probably her biological father was a Scott.
Maybe something similar with your Isabel?

Yes, everyone is listed same as Francis but I've attached another snippet - I don't think we're allowed to post whole pages on here.

I see you and a number of others are chasing these Bertolles and you are probably already ready aware of the baptisms of children of LFAB & Sarah Adams (on FamilySearch) where he is listed as a Dyer and addresses moving close to Bethnal Green.

In the Morning Chronicle, London, Mon Dec 9, 1822 from the London Gazette of Dec 7 under Partnerships Dissolved "H Wheatley, L Bertolle, M Wheatley of Great Garden street, White Chapel Road, Silk-Dyers" but exactly which L Bertolle - well I'll leave that up to you.

You also had another posting trying to find the Bertolles on the 1841 census and I note someone mentioned LFAB's occupation listed as Steward on marriage of dau Elizabeth to John Sergeant.  Well there is a Francis Bertolle, Ship's Steward listed regarding pensions paid to East India Company personnel (attached). Attached is 1815, there are others 7 May 1817, 7 May 1818 and then the next one is Sarah Bertolle Dec 8 1819 - all the information in the snippet is exactly the same for the other Bertolle entries.

Geez, thought my Irish dudes were a headache!!

Hi, you mention you're on "the other side of the world".  If that's Australia, you can join the National Library of Australia for free and access online the House of Commons Parliamentary Papers along with a whole lot of other stuff of course.

Anyway, had a look, for Francis Bertolle and attached are snips from the page.

This is the listed citation:
Parliament:  1814-15
Paper Series:  House of Commons Papers
Paper Number:  107
Volume Page:  XI.417
Volume:  11
Collection:  19th Century House of Commons Sessional Papers

Thanks all, that certainly has me leaning more towards the lady being from his maternal line.

Hi,

Came across this photo in my cousin's documents but no-one in the family has any idea who she is.  There are zero markings on it and I can only assume that it was taken in Australia but could in fact be in Ireland or Scotland.

Having said that, cousin's:

- paternal grandmother emigrated Ireland to Australia 1902
- paternal grandfather born Queensland, Australia 1872 (his parents emigrated Ireland to Aust 1856)
- maternal grandparents emigrated Scotland to Australia aft 1923

Any suggestions of place or time would be helpful,

Christine.

Australia / Re: Laurence Robin GUERIN

Hi Dunscore,

Have you contacted rootschatter Guerin (https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=172703.msg821040#msg821040).

Whilst she is primarily researching Guerin from County Clare to South Australia, I believe she has also researched other Guerins in SA including your line of enquiry so she might have some useful information.

She hasn't been active on this forum for some years but I know she is still around.

Christine.

Yes and yes (although mother's maiden name is only included on deaths from 1974).
For example, if I'm looking for children of Mr Mitchell & Miss Aitken in Angus, well there's just tons of Mitchells births in Angus so that pretty useless. So when I have mother's maiden name I go to the Death Index and search surname Mitchell, mother's maiden surname Aitken and if there's still too many I enter a birth range.  In this example I still get a page of names but I can now look at children's names (sometimes there's a pattern) or the registration district.
If you are lucky enough to end up with some potentials, you will still need to do some googling or searches to ensure you have correct people.
As I said, doesn't always work but every now and then I have a win.
