If anyone is interested, my wife has emailed me a copy of the original photo of James Williams' Christmas display.  It is clearer than in the book. I tried to attach it to this post but its too big. I would be happy to e mail it to anyone who wants a copy.

Another Williams anecdote for you:
When the Abingdon Gaol closed (I don't know the date, does anyone?) the effects were auctioned off.  Williams bought the governor's clock (which was made in Abingdon). It hung in the butchers shop in Abingdon and then in the Steventon Shop, until the Gaol was  restored and turned into a sports centre. The Williams family alive at that time; Gordon, Clive, Derek and Ivor donated the clock and it was hung in the foyer. By the way it is many years since I have been in Abingdon, is the Old Gaol still a sports centre or has it closed?

Hi Debbie (and anyone else)

Have you seen the book "Illustrated in Abingdon". It contains lots of old photos of Abingdon. Anyway, there are pictures of Williams Butcher's Christmas display with James (If i remember right, I will check when I get home) standing in front. Also picture of Black Bull in Bury Street (another family property). Anyone interested I can probably see if it is still printed.

Hi

I'm new to genealogy and this site so please bear with me. I am a Williams born in Abingdon. I have some info about my ancestors and their ocupations. Reading through this thread shows up some similarities but also some names I haven't heard of. James Williams, Thomas Williams, Walter Williams are in my line. Likewise Hilda, Emma and Emma Kate. Occupations are butcher, fishmonger, Pub landlord (Black Bull in Stert Street), Furniture shop in St Helens. The butcher line came down through Walter to my dad and his brothers. I am away working at the moment but when I get home I will look up dates etc and see if they tie in. In the meantime, does any of this info make sense to anyone?
