The Lighter Side / Re: Finding fathers of illegitimate ancestors?
« on: Sunday 24 March 24 00:31 GMT (UK)  »
My g.gran had her last child when she was over 50, he was the 3rd child of her 2nd partner my g.grandfather.  The baby couldn't have been the child of her older daughters (from her first marriage), as they were both pregnant themselves at the time. My gran was only 9 at the time so not old enough to be a mother.  According to family legend, g.gran was in the local papers as being the oldest mother in Hull, although I've not found anything so far.

Today there was news that Cameron Diaz has just had a baby at 51, her previous child being born 4 years ago, Victoria Coren Mitchell also had a baby last year when she was 51, so definitely not impossible now, even if IVF was used and certainly not impossible when my g.gran had her last child in 1893.

Through DNA, I've traced my g.grandfather's ancestry to a Jewish man born Isaac Gomes da Costa in London in 1717, his father, Abraham, born in Portugal in 1681 (which fits family history).  By researching trees of half a dozen 2nd, 3rd and 4th cousins who I share DNA with and with whom I've been in touch, I know each of these people is descended from a different child of Isaac.  However, I've not been able to find out which of Isaac's children is an ancestor of my g.grandfather.  I had been looking at men born about 25 years before my g.grandfather, but it seems his mother was only 16 when he was born, so now I'm going to look at men aged 16-18 to see if I can find out anything.  I did have a DNA match on Ancestry with someone who was apparently descended from my g.grandfather's half sister, same mother but different father but before I could contact this person, she removed her DNA listing.  Interestingly, the mother married a man with the same surname my g.grandfather used all his life, but he couldn't have been the father if he was only a half sibling who shared a mother.  He isn't on census records with this married couple, although there is a child with his name with them but he is younger than my g.grandfather, I have the birth certificate of younger person, so they didn't just put a younger age on various census to cover up the fact that he was born before his mother married.

Unless I get a DNA match with another half sibling who shares a father with him, I am never going to find out who his father was.  I live in hope.

And usually they shared the same surname and grew up with their traits, ethics, and that adoptive parent did all the hard work.

Our adopted son is totally different to the rest of his siblings (children I gave birth to), apart from the fact that he knows whatever happens he has to go to work and work hard for a living.

On the other hand, the daughter I had when I was single and was adopted is nothing like me or the rest of my children.  In fact she is not even like her adoptive parents although she is very similar to her brother (born to her adoptive parents after they adopted her).

So it's not all nature versus nurture.

I managed to get her death record from the GRO but can't work out how to do the same for the marriage.

I guess you mean you got a digital death record from GRO. Sadly, this isn't an option for marriage certificates so you have to go to the GRO website, https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates, and on the right hand side click on "Place an order" and then follow the instructions, putting in the vol. and page numbers.  I think you can get a PDF certificate for £7 which is cheaper than a paper certificate (£11).

Technical Help / Re: Downloads saving as Adobe not Chrome
« on: Saturday 17 February 24 16:06 GMT (UK)  »
This happened to me too!  I use Sumatra PDF and everything suddenly changed to Adobe.  Like you I right clicked on the file but Sumatra had disappeared from the list even though it was still on my laptop.  I had to uninstall Sumatra and then reinstall it, then it worked.  However, I also had to alter the default pdf to ensure all my pdf files turned back to Sumatra.  Unfortunately, I can't remember how I did it!  I think I went to Control Panel, Programs, Default Programs, Set your default programs and then went from there.  Or choose any of the options under Default Programs.

Alternatively, you could try Control Panel, Programs & Features,  Uninstall or change a program, click on Adobe and uninstall.  Mind you, I tried that and it won't uninstall because it states it wasn't properly installed, despite the fact that I didn't install it ::)  I wonder if it is something to do with a Windows update?

Hopefully, someone much more into computers than me can solve your problem.

58 kb is a very small size, you won't get quality work.

I'm happy with what Rootschatters have done for me.  I could have enlarged the photo but no-one asked me to.

The Lighter Side / Re: The worst Ancestry transcription ever?
« on: Thursday 15 February 24 17:18 GMT (UK)  »
Whenever I've transcribed records (not Ancestry), two people have had to transcribe the same record and if there was a discrepancy it was looked at again by other people.  This way, there was a good chance that the eventual record  transcription would be correct.

Anc*  is offering the above person as Edward J Allum/ Meale. George Foster Meale 1860 1940
as his father.

Do you mean that is what is shown on someone's family tree?  If so I would take it with a pinch of salt until you have done the research yourself, or check what people on here have found for you.  Many of the trees on Ancestry are just thrown together with the first name that fits, without any real research being done.
