Hi Everyone,Wow ! infromation comimg thick and fast,I don't know where to start ! Right here goes with what I know.My Henry John, wife Mary, (doctor) was the son of Henry John, wife Ann (schoolmaster) Amelia was his sister,6 siblings sister Caroline (20 years younger) was my Great grandmother. Henry John schoolmaster, was the son of John Peck Hemm, wife Ann,professor of penmanship. He in fact had books published on the subject. He was a schoolmaster in Nottingham, where he was born, but after getting in to "financial difficulties" moved the family to Manchester. That's the family on 1841,HO107/579/10/7/6. Dr Henry's Grandparents
Hope that all makes sense.
I noticed that the "unqualified medical assistant" Henry on the 1901 had lost 20 years !! but I think it is the right one, just need to find when he came back to the UK.
I don't know if the Henson family 1881 is right although the christian names and occupation fit,and the birth reg.for Henry Alfred (Henry A.Henson ?) I can't find a death for him but he wasn't with them going to the US.
So all this has answered some questions and raised some more.
Thank you so much to everyone for all the time you have given,I really do appreciate it.
I actually have a photograph of Dr Henry who has cause so much trouble,I will post it when I figure out how
Many thanks again

Could you please do a look up for me
Conrad Friedrich Wilhelm Wichmann (William)
DOB 24 May 1845 Pattenson by Hanover
He is on the 1871 census in Sheffield and we have a copy of his naturalisation papers 1903,but have no idea where or when he came to England
I would be very grateful for any help.
Thank you for your time

Hi Josephine What a good idea.I have started investigating this.I have sent an email to the public library in Boston Mass, hoping for a reply. The Royal College of Surgeons can do a search of their archives but they charge £35+ for one name.
The only census I can find him on is 1861 when he was a surgeons apprentice in Wilmslow.but the name Hemm seems to cause problems for the transcribers so I live in hope.

Thank you for your suggestion

Hi JustJean,Thank you so much for all your trouble. It looks as though this Gertrude is not my Henry's daughter but I would love to accept your offer to check it for me.No one can be in a hurry with this business, some things take years.I seem to remember looking at the hand written passenger list and thinking it looked like Haine.I have found quite a few variations for Hemm.As you say another brick wall.I have spoken to another Hemm contact today,to tell him of your fantastic directory find and neither of us can fit that listing into the family,so it looks like the name has been transcribed wrongly.I have a photograph of Dr.Henry,he looks a very elegant gentleman,I just wish he had stayed put !! Many many thanks Mumf

Hi JustJean.  Many thanks for your reply. Now at least I know he was there.I had seen the passenger list entry but I don't really think it was them which is a shame. Is there a way to trace a birth certificate for Gertrude ? I would love to know if she was their daughter. They had 2 sons in England who died as babies.I will just have to keep searching.Thank you once again.Mumf
