Wicklow / Visit To Wicklow & Dublin
« on: Wednesday 23 January 08 20:52 GMT (UK)  »
HELP!
I am visiting Dublin with my niece for three days Sunday 27th - Tuesday. I need advice where and what to do in my family search. I emailed the Wicklow History people  about a visit to do some research but have had no reply as yet. We will be hiring a car for the visit.
My Grandfathers (John Shannon) Birth cert states he was born at Ballycurry , Ashford, Wicklow 1872. His fathers (Patrick Shannon) profession was gatekeeper. I think my Gt Gt Grandparents (Patrick & Kate - nee lawler) originated from Clonegal. circa 1845/50.
Any advice about which are the best places - cemetries etc would be greatly appreciated - My family are RC.
Cheers
Bren

Thanks Wendy
I'm finding the Irish bit difficult!
On my Uncle Williams Birth Cert 1878 Wigan, her name was written as Catharine Lauler, as she could not read or write I assume that the spelling was incorrect. On the Census' she is always listed as Catherine

Welcome to Rootschat.
This could be one of the family (from IGI on www.familysearch.org):
John Shannon born 28 Mar.1872 Co. Wicklow, Ireland, son of Patrick Shannon & Kate Lawler.

Looks promising!

I had a look at Griffiths Valuation c.1850 in Donegal to look for where their families might have come from.

There were 24 hits for Shannon but I think that there are less than 20 individuals included.

However there were no hits at all for Lawler or Lawlor or any other variation anywhere in the county.

Yes I wondered if it was the correct County?

This is my first post.... so be gentle with me !
I am tracing my Shannon roots.
I need to know where in Ireland Patrick & Catherine Shannon came from?

So far I have found that my Gt grandfather Patrick Shannon married to Catherine (nee Lawler or Lauler) came to the UK c 1873 with two very young children Patrick & John - They must have travelled via Scotland as on the 1881, 91 and 1901 census Julia Shannon is listed as born in Scotland c1974 - I cannot find her on Scotlandspeople site - In 1878 when William was born they are in Upholland, Wigan, Lancashire. Father Patrick was a Miner.  My late father Wilfred (known as Pat) brought us all up as Catholic, I remember him saying that his Grandad was from Donegal and was a Shepherd or something similar.
