Australia / Re: Marriage Records in Victoria 1840s
« on: Thursday 14 March 19 22:07 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you Kells.
I think I have it straight now.
My mother (Doris Wyatt ) went to school in Kerang.
My connection to Davis is fairly distant. My maternal grandmother was reared
by her Hendy grandparents .Thomas Davies married a Georgina Margaret Hendy.1890 Sandhurst.

Thanks for your trouble.

Hello Kells
I wonder if we are confusing Davis with Doherty.
There is a marriage 1867 William Dohorty = Maria Davis,

William is a s/o John Doherty and Mary Cunningham b14Apr 1845 d1886 Kerang.

Should I be correct , their children were:

William henry 1872 Bullarook
John Henry 1877 Inglewood
Thomas Andrew 1879 Kerang
Ellen 1883 Kerang

There might be confusion with another Davis family.
This one is Doherty who married Davis.

Hello Kells
Are you familiar with this site which embraces Davis genealogy?
I have revisited my data and wondered if it offers an answer to our query.
I couldn't see the marriage of Maria Davis and William Doherty.

Hello Kells
So far as I am concerned , this query remains unsolved.
I am still trying to resolve why certain records for the family of Henry Davis sometimes indicate that he was instead Henry Morgan.
A son Thomas was registered as Thomas Morgan at birth 1858 #11925 Indented Head but died as Thomas Davis Oct 1904 Eaglehawk#11253.

Baptism records from St Mary of the Angels Geelong for a number of siblings alternate the surname Davis and Morgan.
So far as I know the large family was always known as Davis.

Can you help further>

Catherine Monaghan (with variations) is consistantly recorded as the mother.

Henry and Catherine are supposed to have married C1842 Portland Bay (recorded on children's birth records).

Thank you Willsey.
A great find.
I was expecting that John Harry would likely go to see his brother at the Seven Stars Inn.
A related William Henry Harry had died early 1902 so might help explain.

Thank you giblet.
So far as I can determine he arrived Port Adelaide on "Storm Cloud) 1858 and arrived EjDorado/Beechworth a few years later. No record of him until he married 1865 Beechworth.
Ovens and Murray Advertiser (Beechworth) 15 March 1902 indicates he had gone to Melbourne intending to travel to Cornwall.

He returned to Australia late 1902.
Did he return on "Moravia"?

Hello Judith
I am familiar with those threads.
I am revisiting because only recently became aware that he made a trip back home. A newspaper item states that he had gone to Melbourne intending to take a trip to Cornwall. A big undertaking more than 100 years ago.
I am hoping that a passenger list might help me further develop the search.
I am unable to confirm if quoted ships are correct.

Thanks

Australia / John Hammer Harry from Cornwall

My great grandfather was a Cornish miner born 1837 St Mewan.
I believe he came to Australia 1858 on "Storm Cloud" arriving Port Adelaide. This is not proven. I cannot find where he was for several years.
By 1864 he had apparently settled El Dorado Victoria. In 1865 he married at Beechworth Victoria.
A large family was raised in El Dorado. In later years he lived in Rutherglen Victoria.
I now have evidence which suggests he may have taken a trip back to Cornwall in March1902 on "Sophocles" departing Albany W.A. It is unknown how or why he travelled via W.A. This is a mystery.
Apparently he returned to Australia late 1902 on "Moravia".
He died 1915 at Rutherglen and is buried at Carlyle Cemetery.
I am very interested to learn further details as by 1902 his parents and siblings with the exception of a younger brother Henry had died.
Henry was innkeeper at "Seven Stars Inn " St Austell. It is possible that was his destination.

Can anyone help with passenger lists or other snippets of information?
I think he travelled alone.

With thanks.

I think this means she was a sister of William John  Minear.
The Mary Minear bpt 6 Apr 1834 ( base child of Jane )was apparently a sister ( she married William Henry Harry April 1853 St Austell ).Two different people so far as I can see.
Still no bpt found for Mary bC1840. Transcribed as "Mincer" 1841 and 1851
Sorry if still causing confusion.
