New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Thomas Jones from England

Here is the Probate file for Thomas JONES (died 29 December 1966 at Auckland -- details match with the Thomas JONES - NZ Army - Reg. #  11/1814 )

https://ndhadeliver.natlib.govt.nz/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE42030744

While his estate was bequeathed to "his children", they are not named in his Will (or codicil).

The only thing of interest may be the notes, which states he is a resident of Oakley Hospital, Auckland ( a "mental" asylum) ... and prior to this he had been admitted on 25 July 1963 to the
Porirua Hospital (a similar institution), at Wellington.

It would appear that Thomas Jones enlisted for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in 1915.

Next of Kin is listed as: Mrs T Jones (wife), Grendon, Near Atherstone, Warwickshire, England.

The information about his wife is incorrect, though T Jones may be a transcription error. Thomas does clearly answer the question "Are you married?" with "Yes" on the form.

Why do you say information re: wife is incorrect ???

His wife is named as " Mrs T. (for Thomas) JONES.
[That was the correct manner in which a married womans' name was written at that time ... it is still "correct" usage today.   ;D  ]

Still no sign of Katie Adeline Jones or Ethel Ruth Jones (daughters).

Yes, a bit puzzled as to why you say "no sign" of these daughters.  ???

The Ethel Ruth JONES who married Francis Charles HOLMES in (NZ) 1931, is able to be confirmed as having been the daughter of "Thomas JONES of Wellington".

New Zealand / Re: Finding Jane Donnelly & Captain Alexander Edwards 1877

Would love to know more about their lives in NZ, have found a little information regarding Captain Edwards being the Master of the ship "Patea" that wrecked, but not much more on Jane Edwards life in NZ.

Mmm ... not sure that that vessel "Patea" was actually "wrecked".    Seems to have been described as being "ashore" (I guess meaning it had run aground ?).   Also indicated it was likely to be refloated ?   My info was incorrect - hadn't looked far enough through papers but I see the "Patea" was being sold at salvage in 1882.   :-[   ;D

Captain EDWARDS appears in NZ newpapers around 1881-82 - where there is note he took over the "Patea" from a Capt. GIBBONS ?
Can't see EDWARDS in the capacity of "captain" - in the coastal trade - after that date ?   Hopefully if we can find our way to the NZ Mariners records, there may be more info.   ;D

This is just an index listing at Archives NZ.
It indicates that Alexander Edmund EDWARDS was in New Zealand from 1875.

We do have a "list" of Mariners / Seamen relating to New Zealand.
Have used before but can't find at present ???     Maybe someone else will be able to find it and post the link here.    ;D

When I'd looked at NZ electoral rolls earlier, I'd found that the EDWARDS' "electoral qualification" showed "Residential" = meaning that they probably did not at that time, own the residence at which they were living.

1893/1894  - Wellington Central roll showed >

EDWARDS - Alexander Edmund* - Pirie Street - master mariner
EDWARDS - Jane, married woman, Ellice Street

So there they are living presumably at different addresses ?   (Incidentally, Pirie Street and Ellice Streets are in very close proximity. )

And there's Alexander - giving his second christian name as "Edmund" (again) ?
But by the 1900 electoral roll (for Wellington) he's only listed as "Alexander".   Curious ?  ;D

Jan ...
we are in some ways lucky that New Zealand was the first country to give "women the Vote" in 1893.

That means that there is the possibility of finding much more information for women of that era, than there might be for say, Australia / UK etc.    But there are no guarantees.    ;D

The newspapers of the day ran the usual "gossip" columns ... and social columns featuring mostly "the well-to-do".     There were reports of women who committed crimes etc. / and those who were witnesses to same named in court cases ...  in fact all manner of everyday activites were reported on, but not every woman came to the attention of the press.

A picture though of a woman's life at that time, can still be built by utilising snippets of information gained from various sources :    e. g.  Newspapers of the day " what was happening in the area in which she lived / how did her life in New Zealand compare to what she had left behind in the country she came from" etc. etc.    Newspapers are a good starting point for further research.
