Buteshire / Re: Sommervilles
« on: Saturday 03 July 10 18:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi Trixie-Bell,
I was really happy to come across your postings on the Sommervilles, as I seem to have gone down the wrong path! Perhaps you could help me to clarify things?

My gggrandfather was Alex. Stewart married to Ann Sommerville in 1872 in Greenock, she was born in 1853 in Greenock.

Ann's father was John Sommerville, who married Elizabeth Gallocher in 1852 in Greenock, John was born 1832 in Greenock.

John's father was William Sommerville (Or Summarfield as is shown on the MC), he married Anna Pettigrew (or Pettecrew on MC) in 1829 in Kilmory, Shiskine & Lochranza. He was born in 1804 in Rothesay. I have his brother's and sister's detailed as Andrew 1806, Janet 1826, Bryce 1836, Robert, 1805, Jannet 1803.

But this is where I think I have gone wrong....I had his parents as Andrew Sommerville and Mary Niven, but from your posting, I guess that should be John & Martha?

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Regards,
Jeni.

Occupation Interests / Little Cumbrae Lighthouse keeper 1908/9
« on: Monday 24 March 08 16:49 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandfather was the light house keeper on the Little Cumbrae from 1908-1909. His name was Alexander Stewart. I know nothing more about him and I wondered how he would have got that job for only one year. My local history library has dug out some research that shows most of the lighthouse keepers were cradle-to-grave. I can only presume he was a local lad and got a "temp" job until a real lighthouse keeper came along! Any help or suggestions gratefully received.
