Thanks, Rudolf!  That is very interesting and you could be right about him checking the books.  It is sad he died far from home.

I appreciate all your help!    :D

Thanks very much, Rudolf!  The names of the parents tally.  The father's name was Isaac Raphael Huggins.  Not sure why he went to Germany.  I found mention of his British Will on Ancestry and a May Violet Huggins (widow) was the beneficiary.  I'm wondering where I can find any further documents regarding Ernest.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks, Annie!  I learnt a bit of German at school, but only enough to recognize a few words.  The handwriting is hard to decipher.   :-\

It would be great to know the contents of the document.

Hello,  I have found the attached death record for Ernest Edward Huggins and was hoping that someone could translate it for me.  I'm not sure why British-born Ernest was in Germany in 1914 of all times and I was wondering if there might be a cause of death mentioned on the document.

Thanks for any help with this!

It's good to hear that it is a work in progress and makes it so much better to research for those of us overseas, as well as those 'at home' in England who can't visit the LMA.  I can't say enough about the London Electoral records which have been amazing in helping me further my research with my London ancestors!  :D

Thanks everyone for your help!

Thanks for your reply.

You have to browse through the records as it doesn't take the names, but entering the details of the place and year gave no results when I tried to select from the workhouse births for St. Pancras.  It seems the records are not there in the first place to look through.

I'm wondering if it could perhaps be the infirmary which you suggest.  There was another elder daughter from this same mother, Mary, who was born at the Queen Charlotte's Hospital for unwed mothers, so it might be that it could be the infirmary and not the workhouse that Laurie May was born at.  It just says that 115 St. Pancras Road was the mother's address.  It is very complicated, but Laurie May was in fact illegitimate, though the mother Mary 'Burgess' stated on the birth cert. and baptism record that she was married to a John Burgess, a 'butler'.  All the information on these documents is in fact false, except for the date of birth and the name Laurie May.   :-\  I suppose the information was given so hide the fact that the birth was associated with the workhouse.

In fact, the mother's name is Mary Margaret Chapman, my maternal Great Grandmother and the father of Laurie May appeared to be (in latter records I have) a butcher, John Amey from the Marylebone area.  The other daughter, Clarice Margaret Chapman was born 1880 at the Queen Charlotte Hospital in Marylebone.  My Grt. Grandmother Mary Margaret Chapman never married until 1889 in Wimbledon (to Frederic William Brooke).  The two illegitimate girls took on the surnames of Chapman, Brooke and in later documents used the surname of Amey.

It has been so twisty-turny researching with all the name changes and falsehoods, but I've been trying to piece together the 'story' behind it all.  In 1881 Mary Chapman is living with her mother Jane Chapman in Leatherhead, Surrey with newborn Clarice and Clarice is noted as being Jane's child, though Jane was in her fifties.  It would appear that Mary would have been pregnant at the time with Laurie May.

Thanks, David!  It's a shame that they aren't all on there, but as you say it is good that they at least have some records.  I wonder if they will ever expand the collection, as I can't get to the LMA, living so far away.

I read somewhere that Surrey records will be launched on Ancestry soon too, so I'm looking forward to that!

Hi David,

Thanks for checking for me.  It seems that they have not put the records for the date I require on there then.  I seem to remember, though, someone telling me a long time ago on Rootschat that the records had in fact survived for that time period for births and were at the LMA, but it looks like they just aren't on Ancestry.   :(

I have a baptism record for her at St. Saviours Hampstead, and the abode is listed as 115 St. Pancras Road which seems to be the address of the Old St. Pancras Church which is next to the St. Pancras Workhouse.  The birth certicate for Laurie May reiterates this.  I believe sometimes they put an address instead of stating that the child was born in the workhouse.  It just sounded much better.  I just wanted to find out for sure that she would have been born in the workhouse via the birth record for the workhouse itself since the address is for the church.  ???

Thanks for having a look!

Kind regards,

Jilly

Hello, I've been trying to locate the St. Pancras Workhouse birth records from the LMA on Ancestry which I believe are on there now.  Unfortunately, every time I try to enter the information of my grandmother's sister, Laurie May Burgess born September 11, 1881 (Mother's name would have been Mary Burgess) in the search form, I keep getting no results for the search. :-\  I felt certain that these records were included.  Am I wrong?

Thanks,  Jilly
