South Africa / Re: Thiele - East London
« on: Saturday 10 October 09 19:41 BST (UK)  »
Thank you SO much for this.

Ethel was my grandmother who married Steve Marais. You have helped me go back one step further on this side of my family tree. August did remarry after Magdalene died. He left everything to his new wife's son from an earlier marriage which caused a lot of bitterness in the family - hence the lack of info.

If you ever need any info from the Cape Town Archives please dont hesitate to ask.

Once again many thanks - I am ever so grateful for this help.

Much love

That is so kind of you and most appreciated. I do know that my great grandfather remarried after Maria died and his second wife outlived him.  I am most interested in the parents of August and Maria. My Aunt believes that August was born on a German ship while on route to East London which is why the family thought he was German. My gran was born in East London so they must have married there. I am not sure when they moved to Kroonstad but do have photos of the house and both of them taken there. Any info you can get from the estate papers would be most helpful

Thank you again

Hi Leanne
Thank you for your help. I have struggled to find info and fortunately at the cape archives they were able to find the reference for the info you sent me. I will now have to find someone in Bloemfontien to go have a look at the file for me.

Tammy Mitchell [born Mowatt] is actually my cousin in Canada. We do a lot of research together and that is why that info is on the site.

Many many thanks

South Africa / Thiele - East London

I am trying find more information on my great grandfather on my moms side. He was William August Charles Thiele born 21 Sep 1876. He married a Maria Magdalene. Their children were Doris Olive Ethel [my gran] Millie and Dennis.

I have little info on him other than a baptism certificate for my gran that states she was baptised in East London in 1908. I was told recently that he was  born on a German ship coming to South Africa and hence he was considered to be a German. I have tried to find a ship for that year but without success. This info would help me to locate his parents.

Can anyone help me please?

Many thanks

Scotland / Re: Rae Mitchel Milne

Hi Ann
Getting a bit confused but I think what we then saying is:

WILLIAM RAE and ELSPET TAYLOR had a son Alexander Rae born 09/02/1777.

He married Agnes Milne.

They had WILLIAM ALEXANDER 02/08/1807

This would then make sense as the date written by hand would imply that the 3 was in fact a 7 = 1777 and not 1737.

Your a star - and I got other family members as well.

Thank very much

Thanks Ann
I am now going to ask my cousin if any of the wives names perhaps appear on the hand written tree that she has. Hopefully it will confirm one of these. I am most grateful for your help.

Thank you for you replies. You have the right people. I have the details for William but it is the birth date for his father Alexander that concerns me. I was given 1737 and I sure that this is incorrect. It would make more sense if it were 1787 or even 1757.

I have just received information from a cousin that has details of her family tree that links to mine. In it she has William Rae (2/8/1807-8/7/1892) and Christiana Mitchell. Christiana's parents were Sylvester Mitchell and Barbara Barrack.

She add that :

William's parents were Alexander Rae (17/11/1737-1833) and Agnes Milne

I am sure if this correct as it implies that his son William was born when he was 70 years old.

Does anyone else have these people in their tree or further details for me please.

Many thanks

This is the Hugh that married Isabel Grieve Mowatt.  I feel confident that the Hugh Lownie that you had as 30/9/1840 born to Alexander Lownie and Ann Gowan is in fact the same as mine and that my date of 11/10/ 1840 is rather the baptism date and not the birth date. It came off a piece of paper that was handed down through the family.
