Thanks again Monica, I checked that one out also and it does appear to be the same Robert, so now I can either send or visit State Archives for certificate of freedom to see if that has anything more on it (could take a week or two), then as you say I can arrange for documents from (NAS).

Thanks Gadget also for trying, wish that one had paid off, this family are proving very difficult  to get info on.

Hopefully this one is mine, thanks again for your efforts, greatly appreciated.
Cheryl :)

Hello Monica,
Thank you so much for your prompt return, 1828, looks like it could be my Robert MASON, age is right plus father's name, I will have to go to the State Archives, NSW, for copy of his certificate of Freedom to see if that will  verify even further.
Thanks again,
Cheryl. :)

Dumfriesshire / Mason 's of Dumfriesshire
« on: Tuesday 06 July 10 06:25 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I have been searching for a marriage for William MASON and Margaret CREGG in Dumfriesshire around 1810 - 1815, also the birth of their son Robert, according to his death record (13 Jul 1860) in Australia he was born about 1815. I believe Robert may have been a convict transported to Australia on the "Herione" in 1833, but have been unable to verify the facts so far. Can anyone tell me if more detailed records (like his age, and parents names) were ever kept on convicts records in Glasgow and how I would go about accessing them.
Would be most grateful for any assistance, thank you.
Cheryl

Thank you once again Irene, you have been most helpful and it is handy to know that I can rely on so many wonderful people like yourself.
It is most appreciated, especially when I don't have the experience of others in knowing where to look next.
Thank you,
Cheryl.

Thank you so much Irene,
That seems to confirm my suspicions, it would make George's birthdate 1790,which is what I have and I don't think I could get much closer than that, could you tell me does Australian Vital Index Record come under another listing or is it simply known as that, I would like to quote it as a source. This is great news, I've been going around in circles trying to solve this one.
Thank you once again.
Cheryl

Family History Beginners Board / Convict Information

Hello,
I'm after some help, regarding a convict ancestor, I have information from Queensland State Library stating George GAMBRILLwas convicted in Sandwich Quarter Sessions, Kent and was transported to Australia on the "Recovery" 27 May 1837 where he subsequently died in Van Diemans Land 14 November, 1837.unfortunately it does not tell me the year of his birth, so I have been unable to say that he belongs to me.What I would like to know is can anyone tell me if records exist that would give me more information and how do I go about accessing them.
Thanking you for any help. Cheryl

Well! it looks like records for that unit are on the the National Archives UK apparently it was a British Army unit raised in South Africa ref. WO 126/131. But looks like it will have to wait, the fees are a bit high at the moment.

One to put on hold, thanks again.
Cheryl.
