Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: George Braine abt 1771-1834

Hi Chris,

Have you looked at Family Search pilot site as I know there were some entries for William Henley/Hanley Braine and family when I was helping the original poster of this thread a while ago with George Braine and family.

I went into the Jamaica Carribean section but there may be others.  It will be a good place to start anyway.

Regards,
Elizabeth

Hi Liz

Thanks for that. I will certainly do as you suggest

Hi chrisx1

Thanks for your helpful info - much appreciated.

My wife has a family letter written in 1858 by Mary Susannah Hylton (nee Fry) confirming that her cousin Maria Braine had 3 children. LDS records show the 2 children that you have mentioned (George & Wilhelmina) and a third child Mary Price Braine who was christened on 2/11/1822 at St James, Cornwall, Jamaica.

Mary Hylton was born in Jamaica (where she had 3 previous husbands) but in 1858 was living in Camden, New Jersey USA with her 4th husband John Stannard Hylton and family.

Thanks again

Looking for ancestry of George Braine abt1771-1834, merchant in Bristol and subsequently City of London. 1st marriage to Sarah Maies in 1793 producing two children, William Hanley Braine b.bfr. 29.12.1795 and Charles Maies Braine b.bfr. 23.3.1795. 2nd marriage to Elizabeth Paye.

I have info on descendants but I have drawn a blank on George's ancestors. Several Braine families in the Bristol area , and some early ones (c. 16th century) with with very prominent positions. Any help/hints gratefully received.

Sorry cannot help with George Braine's ancestors but I hope you might be able to help me with info about descendants. My wife had a relative Maria Lewis who went to live in Jamaica with her uncle John Fry sometime between 1810 and 1820. Subsequently she married William Hanley Braine in Jamaica in 1820and had 3 children. Apparently she died as a widow in Montego Bay in 1831 but I have no info about William's death or  subsequent info about the children after Maria's death. Anything you can supply would be much appreciated

Other Countries / Researching Dunbar Family in Jamaica & USA
« on: Sunday 30 May 10 03:56 BST (UK)  »
Whilst researching my wife's family tree I have come across correspondence in 1858 between my wife's ancestor Thomas Fry of London  and his neice Mary Susannah Hylton (nee Fry) of Camden, New Jersey USA (in respect of a legacy from the Estate of Thomas's deceased brother Stephen). Mary was born in Jamaica in 1804 and this has led me into trying to track down Mary's maternal ancestors (Dunbar) who appear to have spent many years in Jamaica in the 18th/19th centuries but who had connections in New Jersey where Mary was living in 1858.

Mary's father John Fry(from London) married Mary Jones Dunbar in Jamaica. Mary Dunbar's parents appear to have been born in Jamaica too. Any information on this family would be appreciated.

Hi Ken

The surname of the child you mentioned was Mahoney. My relative was Mahony  - born 10/11/1846.

Very confusing with Mahoney & Mahony both in the same Regiment!

Ken - thanks for your response. As I am living in New Zealand I have not been able to search the Kew records yet but I am arranging for a search to be done on my behalf later this year.

The RHMS information is on the very helpful website http://www.rma-searcher.co.uk/ which indictes that Frederick was age 11 years & 3 months when he was admitted to RHMS. I have information about Frederick's military career which seesms to confirm this.

Thanks for your help

Chris

I am trying to find information about my ancestor Sergeant John Mahony of this Regiment. I know that after his discharge he was a "Barracks Sergeant" at Buttevant Barracks in County Cork between 1858 and 1862 but know very little else about him  other than that he was born about 1810-1815 and that his wife's name was Martha Matilda (Barnes). His daughter Harriet Amelia Mahony married William Wheeler in Buttevant in 1858 and his son Frederick Henry Mahony attended the Royal Hibernian Military School in Dublin from 1858 onwards

If anyone has any information about him I would be grateful
