Cheers Andy that is correct.
The problem for me has always been the release of Army records for D.E.M.S. MRA without attaching a maritime card and frustrations with the MOD as why some do and some don't.

Just to re-emphasise: maritime cards will only be for Army gunners. For Royal Navy D.E.M.S. Pay & Victualing ledgers will need to be searched by the MOD.

Merchant Navy Crew Agreements can also be used in searches for both and Army and Navy D.E.M.S gunners as they signed on as part of the ship's crew.

For Linda, did you manage to progress your search for G.H. MacHardie?

Regards
Hugh

The Common Room / Re: Shipping record for SS Gilroy
« on: Wednesday 03 April 24 13:13 BST (UK)  »

Can anyone help to where I can go to find where he is buried? If the ships logs exist, where would they be kept.

For ship GEO GILROY official number 45817 the Ship's Official Logbook is held at the Maritime History Archive in Canada. You need to ask them to check the narrative section for any entry into his death as reported by the Master. They will look it up for you but any copies will be chargeable.

Make sure you give the official number of the ship and the date of his death so they can optimise a search as logbooks are held for a whole year.

Hugh

Occupation Interests / Re: Grandfather - Merchant Navy

Morgan William Jones, b. Ystrad, Glamorgan 1892, Dis.A number, 999765, appears to have served as follows – note the cards from the Fourth Register of Seamen can contain mistakes and omissions.

It appears that Morgan W. Jones probably did not serve in the Merchant Navy beyond 1924.

109221 – PENMOUNT – 12.6.1922
145644 – USKHAVEN – 5.9.1923
127460 – CANADIAN TRANSPORT? (possibly) – 8.1923
119888 – TEASPOOL – 17.11.1923

The CR1 card was introduced in late 1913 and were usually completed at the Mercantile Marine Office (MMO) at the time discharge books were checked or issued.
The CR2 card was also introduced at the same time and provide details of individual foreign voyage engagement (start) details.

World War One / Re: Arthur Ernest Smith 1895-1971

And where did you find the information about Arthur e Smith - signal boy?
The information comes from ADM 171/132 - page 400 obtainable from TNA Kew. There is no further information to be gleaned other than what I have shown, namely his medal file which shows the award of the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal and a named ship.

I have no information on the movements of either ship.

This is my theory for what it is worth - given what we know.

We cannot at the moment find any RN service record for him and that may be because he may have served in the Mercantile Marine Reserve (MMR). Little in the way of records survive for these men. Many were merchant seamen who signed T124 agreements and variants and who kept their civilian pay and conditions but were subject to naval discipline - they were Naval Auxiliary Personnel (NAP) and wore RN uniform. They were under the command and control of the RN.

He was a signalman (crossed flags) according to his branch badge on his right arm.

There was an Arthur E. Smith - signal boy aboard the Admiralty Yacht WINTONIA who served in the (MMR). See the attached medal file.

WINTONIA (ex-LADYE MAISRY), hired yacht, Pendant No 020. Built 1894, 168grt/233TM. In service 3.11.14-6.4.15. May have served as wireless-equipped A/P Group Leader or in special yacht squadrons, at home or in Mediterranean.

This yacht would also be similar to HMY BACCHANTE.

do you know if there are crew lists anywhere?

As those ships were effectively under Royal Navy control and not operating under Mercantile agreements there won't be any crew lists unfortunately.

Hugh
