Ross & Cromarty / Re: Gillanders family of Stornoway, Ullapool and Rosmarkie
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 05:25 BST (UK)  »
Thanks everyone for their comments and assistance. Apologies for the delay in my reply.

It seems that I am in a rather difficult situation regarding the lack of records available.

The 'Shadder' Annie found and the Geo Gillanders is the Gillanders of Highfield and Factor of Lewis fame. This record was from 1772, which if my info is correct is a few years before the birth of my ancestor.

I believe I found the 'Shadder/Shadir' that my George was tacksman of. The NAS catalogue has an entry thus; "Bond of Caution by James Chapman, chamberlain of Lewis for George Gillanders, tacksman of Shadir in the Island of Lewis in Suspension against Murdoch Morrison, merchant in Stornoway." This Shadir is east of Stornoway on the peninsula. See map.

Another researcher looking into the Gillanders family thinks that the Gillanders family originated in either Aberdeen or Inverness, so will have to investigate these leads, but I'm not holding out much hope.

Skoosh, I believe the 'Cruel Gillanders' refers to MacKenzie Factor Alexander Gillanders, whom I believe is an ancestor. I suppose, as they say, you cannot choose your family.

Thanks again ladies and gents.

Ross & Cromarty / Gillanders family of Stornoway, Ullapool and Rosmarkie
« on: Tuesday 24 July 18 04:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I'm looking for any information or even locations to search for information concerning The above family. I'm mainly searching for George Gillanders parents and family and to confirm his wife (Christian Stewart) parentage and family. Scotlands people are turning up next to nothing regarding these two, so hoping some of the fantastic researchers could help or point me in the right direction.

To avoid going over old ground here is what I know.
George Gillanders born U/K in Ross and Cromarty. Death U/K He married Christian Stewart, supposed daughter of Alexander and Anne Stewart nee Urquhart.
George and Christian are both buried in Mill Street Old Burial Ground, Ullapool. On the headstone of Margaret and John MacKenzie, George has 'Feuar"(someone who has taken out a feu on land). He is also mentioned elsewhere as the 'Tacksman of Shadder'.
George and Christian had the following children:

Margaret Gillanders
1794(R&C)–1859(Ullapool). Married John MacKenzie(1789-1824), in 1814 at Lochbroom, R&C.  John was a Merchant with links to the HEIC. No other info known on family.
Had one child as far as I know.
Annie(1820-1835)

Helen Gillanders
1801(Stornoway)–1864(Conon Bridge). Married William MacGregor(1787-1870), in 1820 at Stornoway, R&C. They had 11 children:
Christian MacGregor (1822–)
Ann McGregor (1824–)
Roderick MacGregor (1826–1910)
Margaret MacGregor (1828–)
Mary MacGregor (1831–)
Alexander James Gillanders MacGregor (1834–)
Margaret MacGregor (1836–)
George MacGregor (1838– )
Helen MacGregor (1840–1910)
Williamina MacGregor (1841– )
William MacGregor (1845–)

George Gillanders Esq(My line)
1805(Stornoway)–1874(Rosemarkie). Married Sophia MacKid in 1829 at Rosemarkie, R&C. George was a merchant and then Inspector of the Poor. He and Sophie were both buried in the Rosemarkie Churchyard.
They had 9 Children:
Eliza MacKenzie Gillanders (1821–1873)
Sophia Forsyth Gillanders (1829–U/K)
Christian Stewart Gillanders (1831–1832)
Catherine Gillanders (1833–U/K)
Christian Ann Gillanders (1834–1903)
George Gillanders (1837–U/K)
Eliza Gillanders (1839–1914)
Alexander Thomas Gillanders (1840–1891)
Robert Joseph Gillanders (1846–1912)

Mary Gillanders
1816 (R&C) –U/K.  Interred with parents at the Mill Street Old Burial Ground, Ullapool.

The family story is, that the above George senior is related to the Gillanders of Highfield, but after tracing and recording those Gillanders, it could be a possibility, but cannot find the records to confirm or deny 110%.

Thank you for any assistance or direction in advance.

Regards,
Matt

What a very interesting read.  Pity it's so old.  Hopefully putting a reply here will notify the posters who were researching this family.

I am a descendant of the Gillanders family. My 6th great grandfather was George Gillanders, brother of Helen Gillanders mentioned in the OP.  George was the brother who married Sophia MacKid in Rosemarkie, Ross-shire.

Hoping this will find someone who wants to share info.

Regards,
Matt.

Wow!! What an interesting turn of events. I wonder whatever happened to Ellen and David after their desertion?
So, now to find Neil's actual death place. I'm guessing London or the port from where they were to leave from.

Thank you all for your wonderful help. You are a credit to the forum.

Hi Monica,
Thank you for your reply. Yes, I have had a bit of a look on that website, but did not find much pertaining to my query. I will go back and have another look in more depth. I think that the Neil you mention is the one I am researching. Thank you.

Wivenhoe,
Thank you for your reply also. As to your request, I will include the transcript(Victoria, Australia, Cemetery Records and Headstone Transcriptions, 1844-1997) where the information is coming from. Unfortunately, I do not live near the cemetery in question so do not have a photograph of the monument. I have emailed the cemetery trust and am waiting for their reply regarding further details on who is interred, owner of plot etc.

Thank you all for the replies. You have been most helpfull.

EV, I have looked extensively on the Vic BMD index but cannot find a death certificate, yet Neil is recorded on his wife, Marion and son John's headstone in St Kilda Cemetery(Melbourne, Australia), as being buried with them. I have emailed the cemetery requestion details regarding his interment if, in fact, he was buried with the others.

Colin and Dorrie, Thanks to you both. I never knew about the naming convention and now looking at each of my Scottish families, it's becoming very apparent. Archibald does seem to be the father. The area of birth also does seem to match in with the census details. The parish of Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon falls at the end of what is called the 'Ross of Mull' area of the island. About 2 miles west of the town of Bunessen(one of the areas major towns) was a village called 'Kilpatrick'(now only a cemetery). Both Ross of Mull and Kilpatrick are locations mentioned as Neil MCARTHUR's birth location.

Thanks again to everyone who commented.

Argyllshire / Brick wall.. Looking for Birth/Parents of Neil MCARTHER or Argyll
« on: Friday 13 July 18 08:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
As it says in the heading, I've hit a fairly sizable brick wall concerning my 5th great grandfather and his family. What I am looking for are his birthdate, birthplace and parents.
Why it's been so difficult finding this fellows family before 1851 as that all the census records have different information.

According to the 1851 census: Neil MCARTHER was born around 1819 in Rossmall(this location doesn't seem to exist. Ross of Mull maybe), Argyll. He is living at 45 King St, Glasgow With his wife Marion MCARTHUR nee WATSON(1824-1886) and Archibald, their son.

On the 1861 Census: Neil is estimated to have been born in 1823 in Glasgow. He is living at 45 King St, Glasgow with his wife Marion and children Archibald(1849), Marion(1857), Mary(1852), John(1854) and Helen(1859).

In the 1871 Census: Neil is estimated to have been again born in 1823, this time at Mall(or Mull), Argyll. He is still living at 45 King St, Glasgow with wife Marion, and children; Archibald, Mary, John, Helen(Ellen), Flora(1861) and Jane(1867).

On the 1881 Census: Neil is now stating he was born in 1817 at Kilpatrick G?, Argyll. He is living at 45 King Street, Glasgow with wife Marion and daughter Helen.
I believe in Feb 1886, Neil and Marion emigrated to Australia, where son John MCARTHUR and his family now lived. Neil died in April 1886, in Melbourne, Victoria and Marion died 4 months later in the same year.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated in trying to work out this little mystery.
