My Uncle was buried in Mount Vernon but a few years later my Aunt sold the Plot to a couple, this was for three coffins so the couple would have filled it up, sad to say my Uncles Headstone was removed and only the couples names are on the new one ( Sad ) my Aunt must have needed the money.

Mount Vernon is a Privately owned R.C. Cemetery.

Hi all,

I have been studying Midlothian for the past 10 years and came across this relating to SHANK, the first picture shows the land they had and the second one how the dwelling would have looked like, sadly this dwelling was taken down before the Reformation 1560, and the newer house was built by either the Duke of Argyll or the Earl of Bute. The person who owned it was a Nichol Elphinstoun and eventually it was purchased by the famous " Bloody " McKenzie who tried the Covananters and had them executed.

The original was in fact a proper Castle.

Hi Flowerdoll

As Mountvernon is out the three I can think off are Old or New Calton are behind the Cannongate that would be the nearest one another one is Newington but these are not R.C., however, being R.C. would not prevent them being buried elsewhere, do you know exactly where they lived and died like an address.

Hi Flowerdoll,

yes the only burial site for R.Cs. is Mount Vernon all my family are in there, however I am sure they could use any one they wanted.

I know that about six or seven years ago some drunken louts from the local Pub set fire to the Mount Vernon Offices and in doing so they destryed all the burial records, but I am sure there were back up's.

What are the names you are looking at.

Regards.

Midlothian / Re: Lookup: Innes Armour Liberton
« on: Friday 07 October 16 16:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi Lancaster32,

I am sure your Innes part of the Tree were Carters in Gilmerton ( Edinburgh ) they erected the Row of buildings on the right hand side of Drum Street as you head towards Dalkeith, at the end of the buildings is a Garage but at that time it was the large house of a Miss Innes.

Sunnyside is now the Clubhouse of Liberton Golf Club, the house itself is really nice, there is really nothing left of Greenend anymore it used to be a small Village at one time.

Innes made their fortune in transporting Coal but the major one was Yellow Sand, Gilmerton had a Sand Pit somewhere and the Sand was used for the floors of the kitchens in the large houses in Edinburgh, seemingly it was well saught after and the Innes Carts were in and out all day, they say the cry in the streets was " Yellow Sand-Yellow Sand.

Hi friends,

I have recently found out that my gg-granddad was married at the above place around 1814, he married Ann McNiff on the 27 July 1835 at St. Bridgid's Innishmagrath, Leitrim, they both moved to Scotland around 1845 ish, his father was John McTeeran who was married to Bridget Rorke.

I am wondering if anyone is also working on these families and would like to share information please.

Many thanks in advance.

Archie.
