Great to hear from you. I've been on the DUKE ancestry for many years. MACGREGOR/CAMPBELL/BUCHANAN/WHITELAW are some of my ancestors I have been following.
CAMPBELLS are a nightmare! My grandmothers name was CElizabeth-Duke Robertson Campbell and I always wondered where the DUKE name came into it. I'll list what I know so here goes-
Margaret Eliott aka Hamilton - Duke - Hunt (married at least 3 times and to Regimental soldiers.
1.Private William Hamilton 44th Regiment of Foot (1st husband)
2.Sgt William Duke 81st Regiment of Foot (2nd husband)
3. Private Thomas Hunt 35th Regiment of Foot (3rd Husband)
1st Husband William Hamilton born abt 1811 Ireland married Margaret Elliot born abt 1810 Ireland Marriage date unknown.
They had a son William Hamilton born abt 1839 Gibraltar and he married in Glasgow 1864 and on his MC states father William Hamilton deceased 44th Regiment of Foot) He also states on some census as born in Gibraltar and Ireland??? When his mother Margaret Elliot aka HUNT died in 1874 he signed her DC.
2nd Husband William Duke born about 1800 Brandon CORK died at Belturbet Barracks 1849. I have a MC for Sgt. Maj. William Duke (widower) to Margaret Turk (widower) 1842 Trinidad. I think the MC was wrongly transcribed....
So I think WIlliam Dukes 1st wife may have been Elizabeth and maybe he had daughter Elizabeth then. Margaret Elliot also would have had son William Hamilton then when their marriage took place.
Now your Maryann was born at the barracks 1845, I have her BC. Also a John Duke was born 1847.
Maryann died in 1905 and William Buchanan died by suicide in 1910
Maryann marriaged William Buchanan in 1863. William Hamilton witnessed but signed as William Hunt!
3rd Husband Thomas Hunt 35th Regiment of Foot married Margaret Elliot aka Hamilton/Duke
both aged 39 in Cavan Ireland (Thomas Hunt listed as bachelor and Margaret Duke as widower. They had a son Thomas Henry Hunt born 1851 and died in 1856 and were living in Glasgow.
I would like to solve all three of Margaret Elliot's husbands and I know there is a military connection. After each husbands death she married very quickly. Margaret Hunt died 1874 in Glasgow and William Hamilton signed the DC.
Unfortunately, I live in Australia and am a bit remedial looking through the National Archives for William Hamilton. I have obtained Thomas Hunt and William Duke though.
William Hamilton and William Duke must have been in Gibraltar or Trinidad at the same time I think for them to marry so quickly after William Hamiltons death. I assume he must have died at Kabul.
Hope this info is helpful to you and not too confusing. I still find it hard. If you need any certificates send me a PM and I will send them to you. Cheers Kay
