Hi,

I haven't as its not on my direct line but I may know a person who may do as she has done much research on the Dominy family and has been to India and the very tea plantations. I'm surprised she has not picked up your post as she is on previous links. Perhaps if you send a message to sharyn555 she maybe able to assist.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Samuel Anstis

Hi Sam,

To answer your question, I'm not sure as I have hit a brick wall in finding where a Thomas Anstis b1741 d1814 came from. I have an idea but I'm still trying to confirm I have the right branch that would take us back further.  Once/if I can prove that then it may help in confirming or disproving that theory about the pirate.

Need some luck or someone to prove the above.

Pete

Hi Sam,

1. Good to hear from you. That thread was sometime ago and much has happened since then! Samuel (good name!) was an older brother of William who was my G/GF both were of course sons of another William b 1808 my G/G/GF.

2. I have been lucky to communicate with someone descended from Sarah Anstis, a sister of William & Samuel, who married a Harry Dominy before moving to India. A child from that marriage Jane Dominy moved to NZ and she kept in contact with Hilda Gane a daughter of Samuel Anstis & Elizabeth Ashley (your direct line) who of course were in NZ also.

3. My father used to write to Hilda over many years and it started an interest for me in tracing the family history.

4. I have currently moved onto other maternal/paternal trees but will no doubt return to the Anstis tree when time allows.  When last looking, I had a hit a brick wall in trying to link back to possible family as far back as 1664 but this was proving difficult and I eventually had to put to one side.

5. I would be interested to know what you have found and maybe we can exchange information. Unfortunately, most of my information is still on paper and it needs much time to upload to a digital format. If only I had the time!

Pete

Hi Jeff,

Yes, that's correct. No, for some reason the Roots picture of Netta didn't get through so I will email you with my address so if you would be kind enough to send any pics to that and I can then view accordingly.

Glad you have made the contact with your NZ family that should prove very worthwhile I suspect. Can you let me know who your Anstis Bray contact is as that could help me further on tracking the Anstis name, perhaps you can send via my email address taht I will send that follows this message?

I aagree the Devon FHS is very useful with some very helpfull members. As your family originated from Gittisham, Devon. See Census 1841 RG No. HO107 Piece 206 Book 4 Page 3 under the name DominG!

Ok, will send a separate email shortly.

Hi Jeff,

Yes, up in Manchester. No I didn't receive the picture I'm afraid of Annetta. However, it would be interesting to see pictures of where Sarah Ann and Harry lived/worked in India. Do you have any that you could copy and send to me please?

I'm hoping Sharyn will be able to find some of Sarah Ann Anstis and Harry as I don't have any.

Pete

Hello all,

1. Firstly to Jeff, I agree the Roots website is fantastic with some very helpful people on it. Looking on the tree and the information below both your parents were cousins (?) so that makes you Warwick and Sharyn 2nd cousins (?). So, I suspect you will uncover some real interesting information between you.

2. Brionne is not a relative but someone who helped get this thing rolling against one of my earlier posts. Thanks Brionne, I will drop her a personal email. If you look at some of the earlier posts you will see details of children that were posted. There could be others but my reckoning there were 3 girls and 5 boys.

3. My research is centred on the Anstis family (Sarah Ann Anstis was a sister to my G G/F) but the information coming out is of real interest not only for me but my father who started me off on this research. So, any further information unearthed would be fantastic!

4. As posted previously, some of Sarah Ann and Harry's children returned to the UK to stay with Aunts and Uncles before returning to India or emigrating elsewhere i.e NZ, OZ etc. or others remained in India.

5. I assume Margaret Dominy (married Dr Lt Young) was known as Netta (?) that's the name on my tree.

6. I'm not sure about the etiquette for email address's on the general site so please send me a personal posting if you prefer?

7. Sharyn. That would be fantastic if you can as I don't believe we have any of either Samuel Anstis or his sister Sarah Ann. As you are aware, my father wrote with Hilda Gane regularly and so he would be particularly interested in those. I think we would then have a "set" of pictures for his Great Uncles and Aunts. I will send you a personal response with my address if you would be kind enough to send copies on with names (if known) of course!

Great stuff!!!

Hi,

1. Great news, thanks for responding to the earlier post. It's a great site Roots! I had a response also from sharyn555, I assume that was part of the same post.

2. Sarah was an older sister to my G/GF William Anstis b 1854. In fact Sarah Ann (to give her correct title!) had an elder sister Mary Joan (died 5 yoa), 3 older brothers James Tucker b 1843, Robert b 1848 and Samuel b 1850 and a younger brother (my G/GF).

3. My tree shows your GM Jane had three children John, George & Frank (Peterson?) and that she born in India circa 1882. I also found that Jane was living with her Uncle Robert in Bath according to 1901 census. So, presumably she emigrated to NZ after 1901?

4. Sarah Ann & Harry (Henry?) Doming/Dominy went to India (between 1876 - 1878?) and had 5 sons and 3 daughters? It would be great to find out more about them and their lives.

5. I would be interested to find out more of all the family if possible and perhaps you would be kind enough to send me a personal response via Roots?

Thanks. Yes it was useful as it shows the Burial of Jesse Peaty 31/7/1855.

I obviously need to find out more from people researching the Peaty family records in particular:

John b1756 m Susanna Hodge b1755 who were Jesse Peaty parents (note the Hodge link).

I believe Ancestry has many links to people researching the Peaty name so I will have to sort out a subscription and get in contact with a few of them.

Dorset / Jesse Peaty (Cerne Abbas) aka Hodge

1. I am researching the Peaty surname (actually one person a Jesse Peaty b. 1786 in Cerne Abbas).

2. We know that a Jesse Peaty married an Elizabeth Cumberland in 1809 but we believe he may have married (bigamously) another Elizabeth (Brooks) in Devon 1815 using an alias of Jesse Hodge. Hodge being his mothers maiden name. Hodge is the surname I am researching. Records of a Jesse Hodge alias Peaty (Patty) were found on the Devon Qtr Sessions in Easter/Epiphany 1829 being sentenced to 12 months for Bigamy.

3. Are you able to shed some light on this or details whether this line of activity is correct as found by others researching the Peaty name?

4. I would be grateful for any assistance you maybe able to offer and thanks in anticipation.
