Canada Lookup Requests Completed / Re: James Arthur HENRY 1881-1957
« on: Wednesday 03 December 14 20:42 GMT (UK)  »
When looking for information on James Arthur Henry with wife Elizabeth/Lily, please be aware there is another JAH with wife Lily that shows up in Manitoba/Sask starting in 1901 through 1921.
James Arthur Henry b. 1881 Ontario
Lily Wilkinson b. England
m. 13/01/1902 Manitoba
first child Gladys Emma b. 1905, Manitoba
show up on 1906, 1911, 1916, 1921 census in Humboldt, Saskatchewan
occupation is farmer but many times this would also be labourer.

Wanted to point this out when looking for info so that you don't assume that all info that you find is for your James Arthur Henry.

When looking for information on James and Elizabeth, I would look for old photos with names on the back, cards, etc. also look for obituaries for the children of this pair as it may give reference to her being nicknamed Lily. Depending on how many females in her family were given the name Elizabeth, many could have been given nicknames. My Aunt Peg real name was Elizabeth, my great grandmother named Polly for Mary Ann.

Good hunting
Val

Double checked and Catherine Saccary died in 1942
address 86 Phalens Road, Glace Bay
burial in St. Anne's Cemetery

Cape Breton Post May 20, 2004
obituary
Margaret Saccary, age 85 b. 1919 Scotland, d. May 19, 2004, Glace Bay
predeceased by husband Joe in 1996

This may be your Joe but I haven't found an obituary as yet or burial.
The Cape Breton Library may be able to help you with an obituary for this Joe to see if it is the one you are looking for.

www.canada411.ca
is an online telephone directory that you may want to use at some point. Several Saccary's are listed for the Glace Bay area.

You may want to contact the catholic churches in Glace Bay to see if they may have records that aren't available on line. Also the funeral home in Glace Bay may also be able to help.

It appears from some of the records that I looked at that the church in Bridgeport that was used at some point was Immaculate Conception Church. Bridgeport is now part of Glace Bay which is part of Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

Cape Breton Regional Library
www.cbrl.ca
They may be able to tell you what is available for genealogy research in Cape Breton.

If you go to Library and Archives Canada under Soldiers of the First World War, 1914-1918

There are Attestation Papers for 3 of the Saccary's.

The Attestation Papers for Moses Saccary show that he was born Harbour Grace Newfoundland on June 9, 1883 (out one year from the census info) It also states his wife as Catherine.

At the Historical Vital Statistics site
www.novascotiagenealogy.com

there is a death for Catherine Saccary (lost my piece of paper) I think in 1942 which states her maiden name was McKinnon

breakdown of families
1901 Nova Scotia/Bridgeport
Sachery, John, head
             Alice, wife
             Moses, son b. June 9, 1882
immigrated 1885, all born Newfoundland

Sacery, Joseph, head, b. 1864
            Margaret, wife
            Frances
            John J
            Alice
Wiseman, Catherine, mother in law
immigrated 1890

Sacary, Abraham, head, b. 1871
            Catherine
            Sarah M
            John W
            Joseph

1911 Census, Nova Scotia, Cape Breton South, Glace Bay

Saccrey, Joseph, immigrated 1890
             Margret
             Francis
             John
             Charles
             Maggie
page 7
Sacery, Abraham
            Catherine
            Sarah
            John
            Joseph
            ?
            Mary A
            Leopold
page 8
Sacery, Beatrice
Sacery, John, father, age 79

From the above census info, I would take a guess that the 2 brothers that came to Nova Scotia from Harbour Grace, Newfoundland are John and Joseph. I couldn't find Moses in any 1911 census but he could be badly transcribed. I would also suggest that Moses and Abraham are possibly brothers.

You won't find a birth listed as online only goes to 1913 at present with another year added annually.

The surname Saccary is unique to Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia - the Bridgeport/Glace Bay area. Possibly 2 brothers originating in Newfoundland. Hard to know which would be the ancestor of your Joseph. Go through the bmd's at the site above to try to separate the 2 families. The occupation would be coal miner.

You could try the public library in Glace Bay to see if they have anything that may help you.

It definitely looks like hat and badge of one of the Canadian Scottish regiments. The cap badge seems quite large and the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, out of Hamilton, Ontario did have a large cap badge. This reserve regiment is still in existence so you may be able to find more information. I do believe that this regiment was in England in 1944 before heading to France.

The young reservist killed at the National War Monument in Ottawa this past week was a member of the Aryll and Sutherland Highlanders with hometown of Hamilton.

Just a few thoughts.

Is it possible that the couple didn't marry in Australia but elsewhere. I did check Free bmd (England) but didn't find anything.

Also, have you looked for the death of JMM's father James in Victoria to see if that could be a lead. I found it interesting that the father died in Victoria and the mother was living in Ontario, Canada. Is it possible that by finding info on the father that might get you closer to finding info on the son.

I checked births in Ontario for the 1890's with a father James and found nothing.

If JMM was in the RAF, his services files may be at Find my Past or at Archives in England. You could search that route as well.

Hope this gives you some more areas to consider.
