Mayo / Re: ACHILL MAYO 1901 CENSUS OF IRELAND I can't find it! Help please.

My GGgm was christened in Dugort in 1838. My family are related to McNally, Hoban, Sheridan and others. The Sheridans owned a hotel. The Hoban and McNally graves are my immediate family and I had extra names added in 2010 when I finally confirmed who was in them!
Our house is still in the family - it too was a hotel.

I was reluctant to put full details on family in the public domain but curiosity and brick walls!
My Ggf William was born in Ballinasloe c1837 and is very well documented after joining the RIC in
1857 age 21. His marriage cert tells me his father was John a retired Army Pensioner deceased by 1866. The war office has lost a section of the records that probably applied to him. He may have died in 1862 when son returned home for while from Lancs Police. I have no idea which regiment but someone may know more and I am told they may still have some Regimental Records. William's four boys are well documented save one John Thomas b 1869 who emigrated to Chicago 1900 (ex RIC) and became a journalist 'for the Herald Tribune' but it did not exist as such then. Visited Cuba but was killed in 1905 in the New York area possibly. He did not stay in Chicago it seems. He did not marry. I inherited a vast quantity of information from the 1800s but apart from my receipt the only other Hoban mentioned was Laurence who rented a family cottage in Achill in the 1940s for a short while. All help gratefully received!

Always good to hear more and maybe one day it will be sorted but fundamentally I am looking for those born circa 1837 (my Ggf's siblings) to a father John. I return to my receipt which I have been trying to upload with no success! After consulting watch experts I now know it is not a watch!

Date Aug 8th 1893, Bought of W E Watts & Co Ltd, Watch Manufacturers and Merchants, St Michaels House, Gloucester.
Item 1 - Aug 13 1892 - 1 et??? (hole in page from wire hook!) Dia Safety. £12. 10s
Crate 3s 6d
Item 2 - Mar 23rd 1893 -Kew? cushion tyre?, spokes repaired & new balls fitted. 19s
Settled with thanks8th Aug 1893.
Sent to Mr J J Hoban, Tynagh, Loughrea, Galway.

I can find no one into technical language of this era but think this could have been part of a horse draw carriage for visitors to the hotel in Achill? This company supplied equipment to Irish Coastguards so shipping would have been easy and J J Hoban must have been a relative to do this for my Gf - none in Tynagh 1901. All ideas much appreciated and will post separately re my family. Many thanks.

I have been overwhelmed by your replies to my request for my pics to be improved and dated. Thank you to Pat, John, Loord74, Wiggy, Steve, Cazza59, Jim1, JenniferC & Eglejok and if I have missed anyone out my sincere apologies. It seems some users do not think you get enough in the way of thanks - if I am late with mine it is because my brain became addled!
I am very curious as to fashions now - a check dress, buttoned up jacket (a uniform?) and will try and do some further research into this.
I have a couple more but will leave things until I have managed to sort this lot out!
Again, very many thanks. RootsChat is an excellent site and I certainly promote it to others. Valerie

Thanks for the tip about making a new topic so everyone can see!
These are the last two and one is a particular mess so any help very much appreciated. All have come from the family house but I am certainly stuck on identities although the family is well documented and I know they meant something to my late Grandmother. Hopefully I can put two and two together and find a likely candidate. Many thanks in advance! Valerie

Thank you all so much -brilliant response and I will pass them around the family to see which they approve of most and add that to my family album. Meanwhile.....
I have four more so here are two - the seated lady and the standing lady - I would be most grateful if someone could also give me a rough date for these 'paper layer' pictures.
thanking you in anticipation - I know you are good!

Excellent and very many thanks Pat - will up load more later and they all have lots of 'atmospheric' décor around them! I should have asked for a date too so will do in future. Fortunately I have some ordinary photos of a later date so I think I can identify this man. Thanks again, Valerie

I have 6 photos -this one is Lauder Bros, 32 Westmoreland street, No 7387.
The others are from F H Mares, 79 Grafton street, and Millard and Robinson, 39 Lower Sackville Street.
All are on several layers of paper and most in worse condition than this one. Can anyone manage to improve this for me? If so there are another 5 waiting.  I have adobe photoshop but these are beyond my skills. Many thanks.
