Antrim / Re: Daniel Bowers

Thanks for replying, I had assumed that the civil registration records would have included parents or a wife/husbands name! The year of birth certainly fits, I have Daniel's year of birth as 1835 going by the information on the Scottish census records, some did vary between 1 or 2 years, so the 1834 on the death cert is another clue, I think my next move is to start checking burial records, as it doesn't look like the death certificate is going to provide any further info.

Thanks again

Antrim / Daniel Bowers

Daniel Bowers came to Glasgow, Scotland around the 1850's along with his wife, children, parents and siblings, I've been able to find lots of info/certificates etc. for the whole family apart from Daniel's death certificate, and have been trying to find out what happened to him, the last date I have for him living in Glasgow is October 1887 at his daughters marriage in Glasgow. I have now come across a death record on Ancestry for a Daniel Bowers in December 1887 in Belfast, and I wonder if this could be him, he was born in County Down, but I know the family moved to Belfast as two of his siblings were born there and he was also married there to Ellen Ivory. If there is anyone who could do a lookup for me at the records office in Belfast I would be extremely grateful. Daniel's parents were Samuel Bowers and Agnes McGannety or McGinnidy.

Hi Anne,

Thanks for your reply, I see what you mean by it not being an actual war grave and the connection is through James Meiklejohn being in the Royal Navy, I checked his death record on Ancestry and although there isn't much info on the death indexes I took it from the location given that he died at home, he was based in Stoke Damerel, Devon. There seems to be something else on the bottom of the headstone which is mostly covered by grass I can only make out the word 'dead' so I'm hoping to get to Stirling during the summer to see what it says. This photo has got me curious to find out who in the family continued to add the other names to the headstones up to 1955.

Thanks again

Marilyn

I found this photo of a headstone in St Ninians churchyard in Stirling, it has 3 generations of my Meiklejohn Family including my grt grandfather grt grt grandfather and grt grt grt grandfather,  I am hoping that perhaps there is someone who lives locally who could tell me if there are any other Meiklejohn headstones in the churchyard, names I am looking for are John and Lily Meiklejohn (nee Armstrong), Robert and Janet Meiklejohn (nee Aikman), John and Elizabeth Meiklejohn (nee Hall).

I have found other Meiklejohn's living in St Ninians as far back as the 1650's but I know St Ninians Church wasn't built until 1730 does anyone know what church would have been used for burials prior to then?

Scotland / Re: Jacobite prisoners from 1745

Maz/MB,
Welcome to Rootschat and the Scotland Board. Unfortunately the small listing that I have only covers those prisoners that were taken from Inverness to Tilbury on 10th June 1746 and as far as I am aware only covers rougly 300 of the total prisoners that were transported, sadly John Meiklejohn is not on this list.

[Thanks for checking, I'll keep looking for other books etc. for information on these prisoners If I find anything I'll post it on the board.]

I have just come across your post re the jacobite prisoners 1747, I found an extract from a book (Scots banished to the American Colonies) on the Ancestry website which referred to a John Meiklejohn age 31, deserter, soldier Royal Scots Stirling, born 1716 taken prisoner at Inverness then to London, Tilbury Fort, transported to Barbados on the ship Frere 31 March 1747. I think this may be my great x 6 grandfather, and I am trying to find out if he survived the journey to Barbados and if so what became of him. I would be really grateful for any other information on him.

Regards
MB
