Occupation Interests / Re: How far would a miller go?
« on: Tuesday 09 January 18 16:10 GMT (UK)  »
This may be a total coincidence but I have recently discovered that my ancestor was a miller at Markfield an Edward Pywell. In 1841 I believe his wife lived with a Richard Bacon/Beacon  and the 2 children assumed his surname.

Thank you for your response. I think that must be right as Mary Ann Maria Pywell born 1834 died 1897 married John Wadsworth in 1854 and witnesses were Henry & Emma Fawkes. Mary Ann registered her children with her maiden name stated as Beacon on GRO index. That is why I linked her to Amos Pywell/Beacon. This is exciting as I have spent years searching for Amos! He was in fact my paternal grandfather as he was 58 when my father was born and in turn my father was 57 when I was born! Any more suggestions most welcome.

Searching for Edward Pywell who married Elizabeth Colver in Quorndon 1828 and had son Amos in Ibstock, Markfield in 1838. Edward was a miller as detailed on birth certificate of Amos. Elizabeth and son Amos, daughter Mary Ann Maria Pywell living at Mill in Lowick by 1841 census with a Richard Bacon (miller) Anyone got any ideas?

Devon / Re: double burials in Devon
« on: Sunday 15 November 15 11:28 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you for a response. However this situation is more mysterious than normal! In one case John Mervin Cutcliffe DRAKE was born at Heanton Punchardon and baptised by his father Zacchary Hammett Drake at Heanton on 13 September 1831.On 9 September he was buried into the grave of Mary Parkin nee Wybron wife of Thomas Parkin at Marwood (St Michael's and All Angels)Church. Mary had been buried on 9 September. The Drakes were an influential and wealthy family throughout Devon, so cost was not an isssue. There were no burials since January 1831 until 19 September 1831 at Heanton. So the issue is why not bury him at Heanton? Another son was born in 1833 with the same name who went on to be a famous and decorated soldier. The other cases are still being investigated but included a seemingly unrelated double burial involving 2 persons from 2 other parishes-i.e not Marwood and signed by the Marwood rector and the rector of an adjoining parish (Bittadon) Any further suggestions gratefully received!

Devon / double burials in Devon
« on: Saturday 14 November 15 10:29 GMT (UK)  »
While transcribing Marwood Church burial records (for a graveyard plan project) I came across 5 instances of 'double burials'.
At least one of these included a baptised child (Reverend's son from an adjoining parish) The burial entries are written within the numbered burial record and the burial dates are mainly within 2 weeks of the original. Any clues?
