Somerset Lookup Requests / Re: Thomas FRY m. Ann Harriet BARNES 1820
« on: Saturday 31 December 16 19:26 GMT (UK)  »
Got me there Chempat!!!  Was so excited to hear from another relative I rushed right in without checking.   I do have a Doris with the dates I mentioned etc. but she was not the daughter of Isaac Fry.  Her father was Clarence Walter Fry 1899-1966 Nova Scotia.  My Thomas Fry was born 1788-1862 Somerset.  He did have a son named Isaac Fry ~1826 Somerset to 1893 Wales and he married Ann Budd.  I should have waited for more info from Mark E to find out which Isaac and Doris he was descended from.

Thanks for catching my mistake.

Hi Mark E

Haven't been on this forum for a while.  I have my family tree on Ancestry.  Your grandmother Doris Verna Fry was my 2nd cousin 1x removed.  I have her dates as 1923-2009 in Nova Scotia.  Did she marry Norman W Bennett.  I would be very interested to share family information with you.
If you want to send me your email I could give you access to my Ancestry tree.

Best wishes

Other Countries / Re: Samuel WOODMAN - Barbados
« on: Tuesday 03 January 12 23:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Dee

Not sure if this is a match of not but I am copying a Will I have found for Samuel Woodman (son of Samuel and Elizabeth Ann Barrow/Burrow(s)).  Which gives more clues....

Proved Will 14 July 1916.

The last will and testament in the year of our Lord, 1913. Samuel Woodman, widower and for many years the butler at Colleton Estate House at the parish of St. John. I direct that the remainder of my property be given to my adopted daughter Maud Holder and wife of Frederick Holder, including all my estate both real and personal on Coach Hill, St. John.

Witnesses

Samuel F.H.Thompson, Frederick Holder 29 May 1913.

14 July 1916, Samuel Thompson and Frederick Holder appeared in the Court of Ordinary and swore that Samuel Woodman died in 1913 and they saw him sign the will.

W.K. Chandler, Acting Chief Justice.

I have never been able to find any information on Maud or how she became the adopted daughter of Samuel.  Also in his Will Samuel states that he is a widower but I have not found any wife for him, date of birth or date of marriage.  All I have is his Will.  I do not have much information for Samuel's brother John Richard Woodman other than his marriage to Dorothy Holder in 1865 and it looks like they could have had 8 children.  I do not know if Maud is attached to John Richard or if she is a child of Samuel's.

Samuel and John Richard's father was Samuel Woodman who died in 1844.  I do not know if their mother was Elizabeth Ann Barrow/Burrow(s) or not.  From Samuel Sr Will he states that Samuel and John Richard are not yet 21 years of age so they must have been born after his other family (born between 1803-1819).  Not sure why his other children were not mentioned in the Will.
Please let me know if this is of any help, if we have a connection or any other information you may have.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks Pampoen and Braw.  I did not find the references you mentioned but while checking for them I came across an entry in FindMyPast for a Mr D H J Pryor who left Southampton on 30 Mar 1895 bound for Cape, South Africa.  I also found an entry for a C Pryor for the same voyage who I think is probably his wife, Clara.
Thank you so much for your help.

Radnorshire / Re: Roger Prosser and Mary Lloyd
« on: Monday 20 December 10 19:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi David

The information you have on Roger is the basically the same as I have except for his parents.  I haven't been able to find any documentation of who they are.  I also have two different birth years for Roger - 1819 or 1825 both in Llandeilo Graban, Radnor.

I have him marrying Mary Lloyd on 17 Apr 1854 in Llandeilo Graban.  On the 1851 census he was working as a labourer for Mary's father, Rees Lloyd in Loreen, Llandeilo Graban.

I have 3 sons for Roger and Mary - James 1853, David 1856 and William 1860 (He was my husband's great grandfather).  Do you have any information on these people and their families?  I have the info on William down to my husband but not sure of his brothers.

I would be very interested in sharing information with you if you think we have the same ancestors.  Do you have any records on Rober's parents?

Merry Christmas

Kay

Hi Don

Have we been in touch on another message board?  George Orr born 1815 was my husband's 3rd great grandfather - so we do indeed have a connection.

I have a family tree on Ancestry.com that you should be able to view whether or not you have a subscription.

Canada Lookup Request / Re: Jack & Annie Rowley, Hamilton, ON - Lost
« on: Friday 19 November 10 20:19 GMT (UK)  »
Problem solved - thank you so much to Jorose, J.J., Jacquie and kiddo and also to the others who have given me help and advice in trying to sort out what happened to Jack and his wife.

It turns out that I was correct when I thought my aunts had mentioned an Uncle Jack and Auntie Polly, I just managed to convince myself it was an Auntie Annie we were looking for.  Jacquie, you reminded me that "Polly" can be another name for "Mary" and then kiddo suggested I try the Hamilton Public Library for information in the City Directories.   They told me that John Rowley and wife Mary lived at 14 Greenaway Avenue in Hamilton from 1954 until John died in 1957 and then Mary lived there until 1970.  Also they told me that there was a burial for a John Rowley 1874-1957.  I have been checking and found a Border Crossing from Canada to USA in 1923 which was for John Rowley, wife Mary at the above address.  From that I discovered that John was born in 1874 in St Helens, Lancashire (where all my other relatives are from).  I then found John and Mary Rowley on the 1901 census in Bolton Lancashire.  Mary was also born in St Helens in 1876.  I then went through my own records and found a Mary Ball daughter of Samuel and Lassey.  I also found this marriage:

Marriage: 22 May 1899 St Peter, Bolton, Lancashire, England
John Rowley - 24 years Bricklayer Bachelor of 30 Halstead Street
Mary Ball - 23 years Spinster of 106a Castle Street
Groom's Father: William Rowley, Contractor
Bride's Father: Samuel Ball, Plate Glass Maker
Witness: William Rowley; Mary Yare
Married by Banns by: E. Hoskyns, VicarRegister: Marriages 1893 - 1902, Page 164, Entry 327

Mary Ball is the great aunt of my twin aunts who went to visit Jack/John and Mary/Polly (not Annie after all) in 1954.  So finally, after all this time of looking for Annie Vernon Harper I now discover I should have been looking for Mary Ball Wink  Isn't that the way family history goes though?

So I have, with all of your help, solved two family puzzles.  I now know the origins of Annie Vernon (not Harper) and have found the Rowleys after all this time living in Hamilton.

You guys have been great help and I thank you all once again.  Everyone on this message board has been so generous with their time on my behalf.

Thanks for all who helped.  I have found Jack Rowley married to a different Auntie ancestor.  He married Mary "Polly" Ball and not Annie Vernon Harper so that was what was confusing my searching.

Thanks again,

South Africa / Simmer and Jack Hospital, Johannesburg
« on: Thursday 18 November 10 00:58 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently discovered that an ancestor of mine died in Johannesburg in the Simmer and Jack Hospital.  I understand that Simmer and Jack refers to a gold mineing company - my ancester was a tin miner from Cornwall.  Is there anyway that I can find out what happened to him or where he might be buried?  I suppose he could have been in a mining accident.  His will was administered in London, England.  He appears on the English census for 1871, 1881 and 1891 and he was married in Cornwall in 1894 so it would appear that he did not spend much time in South Africa.  I have been unable to find any passenger lists for South Africa for the mid 1890s.  I tried to see if I could find him on NAAIRS but had trouble navigating around the site.

Here are his details:

Daniel Huddy James PRYOR
Born: 1871 Gwavas, Sithney, Cornwall, England
Died: 10 April 1897 Johannesburg
Married: 1894 Cornwall to Clara

Any help would be much appreciated,
KayP
