Technical Help / Re: Weird problem with laptop since latest Windows 10 update
« on: Monday 15 January 18 16:14 GMT (UK)  »
I bought my MacBook Pro 2 years ago but haven't really used it much.  Took it to France two summers ago because if fitted so nicely at the bottom of the suitcase.  I like you kept my old laptop going because of Family Historian.

However I have downloaded onto the Mac,Treeview and started to use it and it is actually ok.  Version 2 is better than version 1 which had various problems.  So far no problems and it does everything that FH does, just differently so I am going to persevere.  Apparently there is a way to use FH on a virtual something or other on a Mac but on FHUG there were too many different opinions and options and I just got confused.

I bought a CD for work last year for the latest version of Photoshop elements and found included, was a Mac CD too so have put that on the Mac, so I now feel right at home.  8)

My old laptop seems to be in a pemanent state of Automatic Repair now, despite me doing all the reboot routines.

It's a good excuse to get a new one  - but hate all that setting up  ::)

Anyone got any recommendations for a new one?

All I can say is get a Mac!  Life is too short to sit around all day waiting for MS to upload updates to a laptop, most of which at the end of the day is stuff I don't want and won't use anyway!

But that is probably not want you want to hear because I think you use Macs anyway.

You could uninstall the other one when it's finished being installed!  I'm glad uninstalling one of them has solved your problem though.  I'd never heard of Word updates causing problems until recently.

Uninstalled both the updates from my work laptop and for the first day in a couple of weeks it has done that strange sudden closedown and restart.  So I think it is sorted.  Thank you

Thanks Lizzie, have just managed to uninstall one of those updates and I have screen resolution back to normal.  Unfortunately the other update is being installed as I speak and I canít do anything about it.

My 10 year old Dell studio now has large fuzzy fonts and no way to change the screen resolution back to what it was, googling brought up something about graphics card being obsolete, I've given up on it, I was replacing it with a MacBook Pro that I bought last year anyway.  Time to transfer and put it away.
That could be a problem with the graphics card driver. I had a different problem because the Intel graphics card driver hadn't been tested properly before release.
It would be worth seeing if you can update the driver.
Thank you Graham, I will investigate that at the weekend.  I need time to sit down and stay calm  ::) ::)  Kerry

Iím glad Iím not alone, I thought at first I was doing something to make the laptop just go off.

As for my Dell, it is creaking to its death, it had to go to the local shop last year after one update was so big, it crashed and they had to put in a partition to update it.  Cost me £75, thanks a lot Microsoft.  Bought a Mac which I love, just discovered I can use photoshop on it but didnít want to stop using family historian.  But have just bought TreeView and it does everything that fh does plus I can use my tree on the website on my iPad and sync it with the Mac.  The m key broke off ages ago so I must put it to rest!

Technical Help / Weird problem with laptop since latest Windows 10 update
« on: Friday 12 January 18 16:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Just wondering if anybody else has come across problems since the latest Windows 10 update.  I have two laptops and both now have different issues since the update which took the best part of a day to update.

The issue that I am a little concerned about is my work laptop.  An Acer AspireV.  It doesn't have a great problem except that a minute or two after logging on, most days, I can be sending my first email of the day or looking at a website, and it suddenly closes down and restarts.  For no apparent reason at all.  Googling brought up stuff about overheating, but I have cleaned the fan, and its not overheating anyway, it has only been on for a minute or two.

I'm not very worried yet, but it's a bit annoying, and just wondering if anyone has come across similar.

Australia / Re: Did Michael and Sarah Madigan go to Australia?
« on: Friday 27 October 17 07:35 BST (UK)  »
It looks like Michael and Sarah went back to Ireland.  Michael son of Michael MADIGAN and Sarah BALDWIN was baptised 30 Nov 1855 at St Mary's, Dublin.

Mary's son was the informant when she died in 1918 and he said that she had been in Queensland for 50 years, though he may have just worked that out from when the first child was born.

Debra  :)

Oh wow, thank you Debra, that I hadnít foreseen! But explains why nothing can be found in uk or Australia and they had another child.  :)
